INTRODUCTION (Sunny)
Deforestation is a way of saying trees are cut down, making the land available for other uses. In
many tropical rainforests particularly, deforestation still continues to be a very urgent environmental
issue that jeopardizes peoples livelihoods, threatened species, and intensifies global warming. But
forests all around the world are under threat from deforestation, which is jeopardizing these benefits.
In the Brazilian Amazon, the worlds largest rainforest, deforestation increased in 2015 for the first
time in nearly a decade, to nearly two million acres from August 2015 to July 2016. That is a huge
jump from about 1.5 million acres a year earlier and just over 1.2 million acres the year before that,
according to estimates by Brazils National Institute for Space Research. People make money by
clearing the forests and selling the lumber and wood to be converted into other products, such as
paper, which can be over cutting trees.
Russia (Ram)
Dont be mad though, According to
Russia solely has been claimed to have

of wood, which in ft. is 2.15278208 x 1011 , Scientists have found ways to access the electrical

also play a major role as they carry some
export operations illegally, violating the

inform them about deforestation.
Nigeria (Nuha)
In Nigeria the annual rate of Deforestation is about 3.5% which is about 864868.835 and
988,421.526 acres. The data of 2000-2005 shows that Nigeria has the largest desertification
rates in the world. And it has a loss of 55.7% of its primary forests. In Nigeria, the forests
are clearing up timber export and etc. Causes of deforestation in Nigeria is when fire is used
to burn bushes, unregulated logging such as using it for the manufacture of paper and
furniture. Furthermore, another cause is through rapid urbanization and making more land
available for urban developmental purposes. Oil spillage also cause deforestation in Nigeria.
Reports have shown that since the discovery of oil, about 419 spills have occurred in land,
which leads to the loss of 5-10% of the mangrove forest.
Why Is This Important?
(Ram)
This topic is significant and should be brought to attention because it is harmful to our environment
in several ways. It damages ecosystems by removing trees which are producers, with the most
energy being at the bottom of energy pyramids, even one tree can result in a devastating amount
of damage, especially with the daily humans increasing need of paper and other wood-related
resources such as furniture. In fact, we have been cutting down trees at such a fast rate that,
according to a recent study done by Yale University, only 50% of the trees are left, , since the start
of human civilization. Which is significantly large as you also have to consider, living-species
populations have only increased, from which most of them require oxygen to live, so with less
trees, we only lower our survival rates due to lack of oxygen, along with the fact that trees also
absorb greenhouse gases which greatly damage the atmosphere.

Graphs And Statistics (Lina)
This shows that the
majority of deforestation
is caused by small farms
that rely mainly on family
labor; these farms are
typically under 50 acres.

Fact:
Forests cover 30% of
earths land.

Class Statistics (Lina)
More Statistics
In average per week, 6
students spend 0-2 hours
outdoors, 5 students spend 3-5
hours outdoors, 3 students spend
5-7 hours outdoors, and 6
students spend over 8 hours
outdoors.

When asked of the effects of

deforestation, 2 students said it
was positive, 15 students said it
was negative, and 3 students
said that it depended on the
situation.

18 students recycle and 2

students dont.
WHAT TO DO? (Tenzin)
Planting trees, it might be difficult to keep up with the massive number of trees cut
down, however planting trees can help more oxygen in the air, which also helps
us.

Recycle, using recycled items is good for the environment and helps raw items
demands decrease.

Be apart of a cause, helping in a cause shows how you care about the topics and
the more the merrier.
