Solving Problems in Groups

Problem-solving in groups
Advantages of group problem-
solving
Resources
Pooling physical resources
Qualitatively better
Working with others helps bring
diferent ideas and skills to the
task
Accuracy
Can increase accuracy but not
always
Commitment
People who participate in
decision-making generally are
more committed to the solution
Structured Problem-solving
Approach
Research has shown:
We often make decisions based on emotions.
Groups efectiveness depends on approaching
problems rationally and systematically
No single approach is best for all situations
A structured procedure produces better results
Structured Problem-solving
Approach
After my quick overview of this approach
You will work in small groups to start your online
activity for this week
Approaches and stages in
problem-solving
A structured problem-solving approach
1. Identify the problem or challenge
Examples:
Increasing water supply for a growing
community
Designing a new product
Creating a new marketing strategy
Increasing attendance at a local church or
mosque
Carrying out research project
Sometimes the problems facing the group are
complex and unclear
Important to understand the concerns of each
member
Approaches and stages in
problem-solving
2. Analyze the problem
Word the problem as an open question
Encourages exploratory thinking
E.g., What do we want our vacation to accomplish?
Gather relevant information
Identify things that help and those that interfere with
solving the problem
Approaches and stages in
problem-solving
3. Develop creative solutions
Brainstorm
Get as many ideas as possible, even if they sound weird
Important: dont criticize anyones ideas
Use the nominal group technique
method to allow members to present their ideas without
being attacked
E.g. round robin
Approaches and stages in
problem-solving
4. Evaluate possible solutions
5. Implement the plan
6. Follow up on the solution
