ASSIGNMENT 2
GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music
Video Assignment 02
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy
some sections require you to delete the information on
the slide and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress
through the pre-production phase.
TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or dont like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing
styles, techniques and conventions that we have
looked at in previous sessions. Explore how you could
interpret the song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant,
images, mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to
generate these
CATFISH AND THE
BOTTLEMEN.
This song is called, Kathleen, by Catfish and
the Bottlemen. The whole video is shot
inside a studio with multiple shots . This
video is amplification as there are links
between the lyrics and the visual.
Editing.
The video uses a range of simple special
effects such as; colour disorientation,
rhymic links between the visuals and the
songs. The video also contains flash
movement. Motion blur is a great effect for
this video. The creativity of this video is
effects.
Visual.
The band performance is very concert like,
they stay behind their instruments, jumping
and head banging to the music.
Inspiration.
ED SHEERAN.
CASTLE ON THE HILL.
This song is called, Castle on The Hill by, Ed
Sheeran. The video includes a flashbacks and
look likes through out the video. The video is
amplification as the visuals fir the lyrics of the
song. This video was shot through multiple shots.
Camera Angles.
This video includes a range of camera shots,
such as Medium Close Ups, Wide shots and
extreme close ups.

Visual.
This music videos show Ed Sheeran walking
down a road on his way home whilst remising
about what life used to be like when he was
younger.
Production.
BLONDE AND CRAIG
DAVID
NOTHING LIKE THIS
Camera Angles.
The most common camera angle used in this
music video is wide shot. At the start of every sequence
there is a wide shot and then some zooming in or out to
a mid shot. There is also minimal use of a close ups.
Editing.
This video is made of majority of long shots. This
clips are edited to switch to next shot on the beat. To
change location for move onto the next clip the video
will zoom into a close up and then zoom out into a wide
shot.
Visuals.
The most captivating visual in this video are
the special effect patterns going on in the background
and projected onto the bands face.
Performance.
The main performer of this video is Craig David is a
British singer, songwriter, rapper and record producer.
He is performing his song with the band in a studio.
ADELE Camera Angles.
HOMETOWN GLORY.
There are a range of various close up angle
involved with Adeles Hometown video, Close
ups, Medium close and wide shots.
Editing.
Although the video appears to be a one shot, it
is filmed by various shots through out a studio.
Adeles video uses fades out and ins to break
to the next scene along with close ups.
Visuals.
The main visual that stuck out to me from this
video is the memories projected on the
screens around Adele. These visuals relate to
Adeles lyrics and gives an understanding to
the viewers.
Performances.
There isnt much of a performance from the
singer of the song, Adele who is sat on a stool
in the studio. Her facial expressions are very
still and she takes long, deep looks into the
camera, this is to connect with the viewers.
Production.
I would also like to implicate the uses of the
video been about memories in my video,
MAROON 5
PAYPHONE.
Camera Angles.
There are a various camera angle used in
Maroon 5s video. There are, low shots,
medium close ups, wide shots, tracking

TECHNIQUES
For my video I have researched variety techniques I
would like to use, Long shots, Close ups, medium shot,
low level and eye level shots. I am also going to add a
colour overlay for parts of my video to show the
viewers the flashbacks.
I am going to use various transitions such as fades and
overlaps to show a break between shots, I will also be
using overlaps as I think this is a good way to show two
clips that are linked together. As my video will include
a past and present version of ones-self I will get the
actors to wear similar clothing.
CONVENTIONS
Narrative
Narrative is a popular convention in pop and soul
videos. This helps tell the story of the lyrics. There are
two types of narrative, Linear and Fragmented. I will
implicate Fragmented into music video.
Editing
Jumps cuts is the predominant editing technique used
in music videos. This is because this allows a sudden
change in one scene to another. Transitions such as
fade and dissolve are very common in music videos as
they create a different effect to cuts. I will be using this
transitions in my music video to cut to the flashbacks.
SUMMARY
Effects/ Transitions
I think overlaps and fades create a subtle scene break to show a similar clip that has
happened in the past.
Location
The location I would like to are public areas that are free to use and are easy accessible for
my cast.
Travel
I have one cast member that lives outside of York, therefore, they will have to travel by
train and catch a bus to the filming ground. The other cast members lives within a 15
minute walk from the area.
Flashing backs/Acting
Involving flashback scenes into my video will add more meaning to the video and help the
viewers understand what is going on, the viewers will also get a chance to interpret the
meaning of the video in their own way.
Continuity
Show flashback in my video will give some continuity as help the clips follow from one to
another.
SUMMARY

5 restrictions to your ideas

Location.
I will not be able to film on private owned property without the owner permission. I will
also need a permit to film the York City Centre.
Time.
I will have to plan out a timetable as it when I can film incase I need to go out and get
additional footage. This can be time consuming so should be planned in post production.
Budget.
I do not have a large budget for my music video so I wont be able to hire professional
studios and actors. This mean I will have to make d with what I can afford and find
alternatives.
Travel
One of my actor lives outside of York. This means transport could be an issue if
late or missed a train/bus. This will delay filming for up to 1hr+
Health
I need to know all health risks with my cast as they may fall ill ehilst filming.
This means I need to know what medication they are allowed.

TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make
your music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
GUIDANCE:
BUDGET TARGET
You have provisionally given an outline target of 2000
to make your music video
This target should include a 10% contingency [that
means your budget should allow for 200 pounds
within the budget so realistically you aim lower than
1800]
Your budget should account for everything, except your
own time and input
Consider more than one option to solve a requirement
you may be able to balance your budget later, there
will have to be a compromise somewhere
GUIDANCE:
TIME
You will need to plan a schedule for the pre-
production/production/post-production
Nominally you should work on 2 weeks pre-production,
1 week filming [2 college days Mon./Tues first week
after half term] and 2 weeks edit/post-production
Who is going to do what? How will you split the time?
When can you film? What is the availability of the
equipment/resources/locations/personnel?
What problems can you foresee? How will you
overcome them?

TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your interpretation of it
[remember the questions in the workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material from your pitch]
I intend to create a music video, my song choice is Kathleen by Catfish
and The Bottlemen. The videos main focus will be on the band playing the
instruments and performing. My video will be amplification. Catfish and
The Bottlemen is a British rock band.
For my music video I have being influenced by concerts and other music
video that share the same genre as my song. My video will be shot in a
theater and studio. I will be using the studio green screen to create the
majority of video.
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
I intend to make a music video which includes a band
performance and a narrative. The beginning of the
video will show the introducing of the band equipment.
Fading upwards to a silhouette of the band equipment,
then the red and blue spotlight hit each equipment to
the beat of the music. These shots will be wide shots. I
have chosen to make the band member and the
equipment into silhouettes as I will have effects in the
background that will make them stand out. For the
remainder of the I will have a narrative. This will
include a range a different shots such as; close ups,
wide shots, O.T.S etc.. The slow paced so I intend to
speed it up at certain point, like the beginning to have
a fast paced beat. The rest of the song will be slow and
my shots will be controlled and follow a similar pace to
fi together.
LOCATIONS
My video will include a band performing. To do this I would hire a
theatre space in york called Joseph Rowntree Theatre. This will cost
295 for 4 hours which is more than another time to film. The
theatre includes the spotlights I wish to use in the price.
I will also hire out a studio in London as the rest of my video will be
shot in London. It will coast 150 for half a day. The studio facilities
are; 450 sq ft of usable studio space, High ceiling ranging from 14ft,
Make-Up and Hair station, Dressing Room, 0 Smart TV with HDMI-
Cable 5m, Bluetooth /AUX Sound Bar, Wireless Broadband Internet
access, Clothing Rail, Iron / Ironing Board, Garment Steamer, Tea /
Coffee making facilities, water and fridge, Close to local shops and
restaurants, Easy access by public transport; 2 minute walk from
Seven Sisters tube station, Elevator near studio entrance,
Wheelchair access.
My the next part of my video will be narrative I will use Greenwich
Park. This will not cost as it is a public space.
EQUIPMENT
When? Look at equipment hire places, etc
Camera.
I am going to hire a Canon EOS 5D MKIII. I will be
hiring this camera for a week at the cost of 311.81.
This price includes the basic camera accessories. I
considered this camera as it has great sound quality
(which is essential for my project), shoots in high
quality in low light, and the camera is a strong build.
Lens.
They lens will be using is Conon EF 11-24MM.
123.12 for a weeks hire.
Tripod.
i will be hiring a tripod for 53.59 for a weeks hire.
The tripod I have chosen has a 3 way head to make
it very precise.
EQUIPMENT
Shoulder Mount.
I will need a shoulder mount to film the majority of
my music video. As I have done my research I have
found that it would work out cheaper to buy a
shoulder mount than to rent one for a maximum of
3 days. The price to buy a this shoulder mount is
25.
FACILITIES
Editing.
For my video I will need to hire a editing suite, this
will make my video look professional and a high
standard. Hiring a editing suite will make the end
result look more professional and finished to a high
quality. Hiring a editing suit will workout a lot cheaper
than buying the expensive software needed.
I have found a filming and editing suit called Giant
Leap Productions. this suite comes equipped with
filming equipment and editing equipment. The price
of the suite varies depending on how long you would
like the suite and watch equipment you would like
with it. I would like the editing suite for 2 days
maximum. This will cost me 199 however I would
like to hire an editor which will make the price up to
295 for 2 days.
PERSONNEL
CREW
For the crew I will have 3 people in total. I will be doing the camera
work, the second will be in charge of props, and the third will be my
second camera person. I have set aside 5 for each persons lunch
during filming.
CAST
I have 5 cast members. The main cast members will be Weronika and
Tyler. The 3 remaining cast will represent a younger revision of the 2
main cast members. I will be putting 5 a side for each person lunch.
TRANSPORT
For any member of crew or cast that live outside of york and have no
funds to come to york I will be setting 20 aside for travel. However,
to save cost the majority of people o have hired live in York, where I
will be filming.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Band Props.
I will need band equipment such as; drum kit, guitars and a
microphones and stand and amps. I will be buying this equipment; 120
for the guitar, 52 for the amp, 49.99 for microphone stand & 22.99
for the microphone, and the drum kit will cost 149.99.
Extra Props.
I will need extra props for my music video. I have put 50 back for this. I
will need to print photos and pin them to tress to show a walk down
memory lane for my video. I will also need a few more props/
accessories.
Costume.
For clothes attire, it will be summer casual. The female main character
and the younger version of the character will be wearing a similar
costume. This is to represent that they are the same person.

costs
Local equipment hire companies have costs for camera, lenses
and kit [tripod, dolly, steadicam rigs, etc]
Travel by vehicle can be nominally charged at 40p per mile so
you need to know how far you location is from where you are!
CODES OF PRACTICE
AND REGULATIONS
Do you need clearance for copyrighted materials? [you will
need to contact Mechanical Copyright Protection Society-
Performing Rights Society Alliance (MCPS-PRS)]
Do you have performers external to your group performing?
They will need release forms that declare you can use footage
of them in the production. This needs to be planned for.
Do you have any actors under the age of 18? You will need
parental permission forms.
Are you filming on private property? You will need written
consent PRIOR to filming. Plan in advance. This needs to be
considered.
Consider where you may need specific risk assessments and
health and safety documentation
CODES OF PRACTICE
AND REGULATIONS
I have one actor that will be under the age of 18. for
this I will need to get the parents to sign a parental
permission slip.
As the knavesmire is not privately owned I do not need
to fill out any consent forms to film.
In case any of my actor injure themselves I will need to
make sure I know the health risks my actor may have.
FINANCE/PRODUCTION
COSTS
Using industry rates cards and researched costs of
equipment [cameras], cast, crew, props and facilities
[locations, edit rooms, etc] calculate the likely cost of your
production
Outline details of financial considerations of project, this
could be cost of props/costume/travel/food/etc
Explain what your overall budget is [if applicable] and how
this is to be met
How will you deal with any extra costs? Contingency fund?
What percentage of your budget should this be? [hint: add
10% on to the final cost, this should cover it!]
Do you foresee any problems? How will you manage
this/over come them?
FINAL BUDGET
BREAKDOWN
BUDGET EXPLANATION
AND JUSTIFICATION
My budget is 2000. I have a contingency fund of 200
in case my plan does work. This budget will be used t
hire cameras, editing suites, studio etc. I will be putting
20 aside for the cast and crew lunch. I will also put
70 aside for travel cost.
Problems that I may face is the weather. If it rains on
the day I would like to film, I will not be able to do so as
I will not be hiring any waterproof covers. I will then
have to change the dates of filming with will mean
hiring the camera equipment out for an extra day. I
have kept 200 aside in case I come into issues like
this.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
MOOD
BOARD.
STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas
to each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of
the song, then add a slide for each section with
timings, lyrics, what happens and details on specific
shots

You could storyboard and shot list each section as you

go, to break up the process.

SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-
