EVALUATION VOIP SERVICES OVER WIMAX NETWORK
Abstract
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a
communication technology for voice and
multimedia transmission over Internet Protocol
(IP) while Worldwide Interoperability for
Microwave Access (WiMAX) is a wireless
telecommunications protocol. With the
increasing popularity of information transfer,
VoIP will be widely in use. As customers' desire
nowadays for mobility and flexibility, long
distance data transfer with the use of smart
phones with WiMAX are highly desirable.
Analysis of Quality of Service (QoS) on long
distance data transfer between two locations
What is VoIP
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an
internet technology for the
transmission of voice and multimedia
over the Internet Protocol (IP) based
network, especially the Internet. It has
been widely in use as a communication
protocol to replace traditional
telephone technology, Public Switched
Telephone Network (PSTN)
VoIP over WiMAX
WiMAX as a broadband wireless
technology is considered as an
alternate solution to wired
networks. It provides up to 75 Mbps
data rate and has a coverage area
of up to 50 km . It also supports QoS
requirements by various
applications especially real-time
applications such as VoIP. WiMAX
supports its applications
VoIP over WiMAX
: through four distinct traffic classes
Best Effort (BE) is designed for applications
. such as web browsing that do not require QoS
Non Real-Time Polling service (nrtPS)
supports non real-time applications such as
File Transport Protocol (FTP) that require
. variable size of data
Unsolicited Grant service (UGS) supports
Constant Bit Rate (CBR) application such as
VoIP without silence suppression where Base
Station (BS) assigns a fixed bandwidth to
. users
Real-Time Polling service (rtPS) supports real-
time applications with variable size data such
Opnet Model
using OPNET Modeler 14.5 . And I have two
Scenarios each Scenario has a special
parameters

Scenario (1) Scenario (2)

WiMAX configuration Application configuration

WiMAX: Mobile Node

In these figures clarify the parameters for each
one of them .in figure of WiMAX configuration
including the numbers of Rows and efficiency
mode (mobility and Ranging Enabled) the reason
for choosing this type because the project
includes mobile node. Wimax confg. Contents
scheduling type (UGS)chose this type because it
is used with VOIP .There are others types for
example (ertps it is used with the active voice
detection technology, rtps with video , nrtps with
FTP and HTTP ,best effort but this type does not
. have any guarantees
Also application configurations includes the
description (voice PCM Quality speech) this type
. it has a high quality of voice

Throuphput when BW=-1 db

For Scenario 2 (square trajectory)

Average MOS for scenario 2 MOS

for Mobile (4-1)

In this ruselt we can see the MOS for
Mobile (4-1)equal 2.5
For Scenario 2 (square trajectory

Results of the Simulation
In this section, the results are obtained after
implementing the IEEE802.16e network
simulation by using OPNET Modeler under
different trajectory. The simulation include
Throughput (packet/sec), Mean Opinion Score
.(MOS)
We have figures shows the average MOS
value. The MOS value gives a description of the
perceived quality of receiving voice after being
.. transmitted and compressed using codecs
In figures the throughput of Mobile have
maximum rate of throughput 1600 packets /sec
when the network has star trajectory and the
Conclusions
In my projects , we evaluated the
performance VoIP codecs over
WiMAX networks. The VoIP
performance was simulated two
scenarios using OPNET 14.5 and
compare the results with the use of
the different trajectory and different
. bandwidth
