Voltaic Cell
Daniell Cell
Daniell Cell
Copperandzincelectrodesare immersed
in asolutionofcopper (II) sulphate
andzinc sulphaterespectively.

Connected by a salt bridge or porous pot.

Salt bridge is made from a piece of filter

paper soaked in saturated solution which do
not react with the two electrolytes.
Daniell Cell
Salt bridge/ Porous pot
Prevents the solution from mixing
together
Allows electrical contact between the
two solutions.
Daniell Cell
Zinc as the negative terminal of the cell.
More reactive metal than copper.
Release electron to form zinc ions.
Zn(s) Zn2+(aq)+ 2e-.
Copper as the positive terminal of the cell.
Copper ions accept electron to form
copper atoms.
Cu2+(aq)+ 2e- Cu(s)
Daniell Cell
Overall reaction
Zn(s) +Cu2+(aq) Zn2+(aq) + Cu(s)

The intensity of the blue colour of the

copper (II) sulphate solution decreases as
the concentration of the copper(II) ions
decreases gradually.
Electrons flow from the zinc plate to the
copper plate produces an electric current.
Similarities between
Electrolytic Cell and Voltaic
Cell
Consist of an electrolyte each.
Consist of two electrodes each.
Anode : Donation of electrons
Cathode : Acceptance of electrons.
Electrons flow from the anode to the
cathode in the external circuit.
Differences between
Electrolytic Cell and Voltaic Cell
Characteristic Electrolytic Cell Voltaic cell

Conversation of Converts electrical energy Converts chemical energy

Electrochemical Series
An arrangement of metals based on the
tendency of each metal atom to donate
electrons.
Constructed based on:
The potential difference between two
metals.
The ability of a metal to displace
another metal from its salt solution.
Displacement reactions
A metal which is higher in the ECS is able
to displace a metal below it in the series
from its salt solution.
Zn(s) + Pb(NO3)2 (aq) Zn(NO3)2 (aq) + Pb(s)

Metal displaced

Zn(s) + CuSO4 (aq) ZnSO4 (aq) + Cu(s)

Metal displaced
The Importance of ECS
The ECS can be used to determine the
following:
a)The terminals of a voltaic cell
b)The standard cell voltage
c)The ability of a metal to displace another
metal from its salt solution.
Based on the information given above, answer the following
question.
a)What will happen to the copper electrode? Why?
b) State the changes in colour of the solution in the beaker
that has the copper electrode.
c)What will happen to the mass of the iron?
d)State the direction of the electrons flow.
e)State the direction of the conventional current.
