FIELD TR IP TO R A N C H O
D O M IN G U EZ
Introduction:
My field trip planning will focus on students
at the 4th grade level.
Based on the childrens level of
comprehension, I have decided to take
them on a field trip so they can experience
a real life moment at a Rancho. While
visiting the rancho students will be able to
walk through history with the help of
special age-appropriate tours that will meet
social studies standards and cover local,
state and national history.
SocialScience Standards
4.2 Student describe the social, political, cultural, and
economic life and interactions among people of
California from the Pre-Columbian societies to Spanish
mission and Mexican rancho periods, in terms of :
5. the daily lives of the people, natives, and non-
native, who occupied the presidios, missions, ranchos,
and pueblos.
7. The effects of Mexican War for Independence on
Alta-California, including the territorial boundaries of
North America.
8. The period of Mexican rule and its attributes,
including land grants, secularization of the missions
and the rise of the rancho economy.

First Spanish land grant in California.

The land was granted in 1784 by King
Carlos III to Juan Jose Dominguez.
Juan Jose Dominguez was a retired
Spanish soldier who came to California
with the Portola expedition and later
with Father Junipero Serra.
The land was passed on through
successive generations and currently
remains in the Dominguez family.
