Tobacco use on Arkansas Tech campus

Team Project
SITUATION

With the amount of students at Arkansas Tech University, the amount of smokers
on campus is probably considerably high.
The students on campus are not getting the proper information of the long term
effects of smoking.
Students and the public not only need to have the knowledge of the effects of
smoking but also what it does to the environment.
Deaths are at a high when it comes to the number of deaths each year caused by
smoking. Not only this, but people exposed to second hand smoke are being
effected as well.
Survey results
Out of the people that we surveyed, 59% of them were enrolled as
college students and the other 41% were not enrolled as a college
student.
Out of the people we surveyed, 39 % were females and 61% were
males.
Out of the people that we surveyed, only 20% of them were smokers.
Only 29% of the people surveyed live on campus.
All of the college students that answered the survey said that they
were not allowed to smoke on campus. We are hoping that all of this
helps it stay that way.
If quitting smoking improved your academic grade, would this
encourage you to stop smoking?

Only 31% of the people that we surveyed said they could be

encouraged to quit smoking to help their academic grade. This is
really shocking to know that smoking is more important than
some peoples academics.

Only 78% of the people surveyed were very aware of the effects

be more information given on campus and off to help people
understand more about the risks of smoking.

Only 61% of the people that were surveyed were very aware of the

smoking, but everyone else as well. We need to get the word out there
so that people realize what it is doing to the environment around us.

It is baffling how many students do not care to learn about how

smoking effects health and the environment. This is an important
issue and needs to be a bigger priority to some people.

Evaluation Methods
Determine how many people are viewing and getting involved in the Facebook advertisement page.

Determine how many people actually attended the guest speakers to get an idea of how many
people are getting involved.

Determine how many people have signed forms saying that they are aware of Tech being a tobacco
free campus. This is a very important one because we want to make sure that the students are
aware of the policies.

Determine how many people are going to the luncheons to get information on the policies, plans,
and procedures. This can also help us to determine whether not we should have more of these in
the future and how effective they really are.

Determine and keep track of how many brochures are given out to be able to roughly estimate how
many people are really getting the message and how effective the brochures are. Also, if brochures
are being put in classrooms, cafeteria, etc., determine how many are being picked up versus how
many we have put out.
Monitor how many people we see smoking or using tobacco on school grounds or campus
events versus how many people are being punished for using.

Determine how effective the fines and rules are from keeping people from using tobacco on
campus.

Keep track of the progress of Tech becoming a tobacco free campus.

Determine where the meeting will be held to discuss policies as well as time and how many
times will we have to meet before policy is set in place.

Determine the use of tobacco that is used on campus as well at sporting events to determine
how many people are smokers.
Conclusion

After gathering all our research and looking at the big picture, we have come
to realize that we need to strive to help bring better awareness on campus,
as well as the community to help keep our students safe and healthy.
More information needs to be given to the students at Arkansas Tech
University about the effects of smoking on our health as well as the
environment.
We have determined that Public Safety needs to take steps to get more rules
set in place for people who break the tobacco policy.
