Shooting a Free

Throw
Grade Level: 6-8

Standards: 8-2.1 Identify critical elements/learning cues of skills
performed in invasion games, target and net/wall games,
striking/fielding games.(for example, recognize "balance, eyes,
elbows and follow through" as learning cues for performing a free
throw).
Standards: 8-1.4 Demonstrate in a modified situation the basic skills

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to recall the correct steps to perform a free
throw.
2. Students will be able to apply the correct steps in order to make 2

3. Students will be able to use the skills they have learned and
incorporate them into a recreational game of basketball.

stopping movements. This helps to build agility and
may even strengthen your muscles.

In a regular game of basketball, there are 5 players
on each team: a point guard, shooting guard, power
forward, small forward, and a center.
Basic A game is consists of 4 quarters, where each quarter
is 12 minutes long.
Basketball Points are scored by ones, twos, and threes. Beyond
Facts the arch is worth three points, anything inside the
arch is worth two points.
The Free Throw, which is what we will be learning, is
worth one point.
Using the B.E.E.F. method. I will teach the students
how to properly shoot a basketball. The B stands for
balance. Standing with your feet shoulder width
apart and bending with your knees in an athletic
stance. The first E stands for elbow. Positioning your
B.E.E.F. elbow on your shooting arm directly underneath the
ball as you are shooting. The second E stands for
eyes. Focusing your eyes on the back of the
basketball rim as you shoot. The F stands for follow
through. Make sure you flick your wrist and follow
through with your arm after you shoot.
After learning how to shoot a basketball using the
B.E.E.F. method, students will demonstrate the steps
several times without using a basketball.
Once the students have demonstrated these skills
correctly, they will apply these steps with a
basketball. (Not shooting the free throw)
Technique Next, students will attempt to shoot their free throws.
The goal is for students to make 2 out of 3 of their
free throws using the correct steps.
