Adversary
Adversary = Environment is working
against us
It requires us to overcome the challenge
that the environment sets for us. This
could mean that we see the environment
as a threat.
You will see signs warning of rips, dumping
waves and unstable cliffs along the
Surfcoast Walk between Torquay and
Anglesea
Adversary
A recreational user may perceive the
environment as an adversary as they
attempt to take on the environment
Sir Edmund Hillary was the first man to
climb Mt Everest. He described his
achievement as knocking the bastard off
as though he had defeated the mountain
Gymnasium
This perception sees the environment as a
venue for human activity for running,
walking, jumping, climbing, swimming or
paddling
It provides terrain, gradients, waves holds
or rapids that are the playground in which
we engage in and enjoy activities
Resource
Portraying the environment as a resource
reflects the attitude that the environment
should be used to support our needs.
This may include taking things directly out
of the environment (timber harvesting), or
modifying the environment to produce
what we need (farming).
Resource
More and more people are becoming
environmentally aware of their impacts on
the environment when using it as a
resource so more sustainable practices are
now being implemented than ever before
Resource
The environment will always provide
opportunity for income so society will
forever be exploring, experimenting and
discovering new ways to exploit the
environment for fanatical gain
Museum
The environment is viewed as a place of
history, where we can learn about how
human relationships with the outdoors have
changed over time
Museums can be a storehouse where things
are kept and preserved for a long period of
time. Reference areas in NPs are places
where we can see how the environment
looks like with minimal human impact
Museum
Someone may enjoy visiting a natural
environment to escape the human-
dominated landscapes that surround them
in their day to day lives.
With an ever increasing separation of
humans from nature and intact
environments becoming more and more
rare, the environment becomes a small
example of what was once all around us
and where we came from
Cathedral
Regards the environment in a spiritual
way. This perception often highlights how
special the environment is and how it
contributes to humans wellbeing.
It is not necessarily a religious connection,
but a connection that highlights the
importance of the environment to us, on a
deeper level that what we can gain from
the environment physically
Cathedral
Unlike an adversary, this portrayal does
not see people as separate or superior to
the environment. It can be a feeling of joy
or relaxation from just being present in the
outdoors.
Indigenous cultures from all around the
world express their spiritual connection
with the environment and this connection
is growing amongst modern day society
Cathedral
Deep ecology is a modern term which
expresses the environment as not just out
there but something that we are a part of,
and have a role to play in.
