Mathematics- The clock

Analyze learners
2nd graders

20 total students: 8 boys and 12 girls

Ages 7-8
Mostly visual and kinesthetic learners, few are verbal.
No students with any learning disability

Culturally diverse classroom (mostly with English as their second


language.
Students are from lower/middle class families

Learning styles:
State Objectives
1. Students will be able to memorize the numbers on a clock and their
correct places with 95% accuracy.

2. Students will be able to draw a clock with the right numbers in the
right places without any mistakes.

3. Students will be able to recite the minutes on a clock with 80%


accuracy.

4. Students will be able to differentiate the short hand and long hand on
a clock on which is for the minutes and which is for the numbers.

5. Students will be able to tell the right time on a clock with 85%
accuracy.
Select Methods, Media and Materials

A clock will be demonstrated to the students on the numbers,


minutes, and short/long hand.
papers and crayons will be used for the students to draw
their own clock with their own decorations.
5 small clocks that the students will be able to turn the
long/short hand on the clock, then they will get into 4
groups of 5 students in each and work together to prepare
them for their group activity.
Utilize Methods, Media, Materials
1. At the beginning of class, teacher will explain the clock to the students
on all the numbers it consist.

2. We will learn together what each of the numbers on the clock


represent in minutes including the minutes between each number.

3. Papers and crayons will be passed out to the students to draw their
own clocks which will be posted up in the classroom afterwards.

4. Students will be in 4 groups consist of 5 students in each with their


own clock distributed from the teacher to use for group activity.
Require Learner Participation
Introduction: Teacher will introduce a clock to the students including all
the numbers and the minutes on the clock. Teacher will also briefly
explain and discuss the importance it has with our daily lives.

Activity:

In their groups, students will work together to show the right time on each
of their clocks as the teacher write the time on the board. Students will
have one volunteer from their groups to run up in front with the right time
shown on their clocks. Points will be added to which group comes up first.
Evaluate and Revise
Students will be evaluated on how they do in drawing their own clocks (in
ways they wish to ) as long as they have the right numbers in the right
places along with the minutes written next to each numbers. Drawings
will be posted in class for decorations and for their parents to see.

Students must master the minutes on a clock in order to move in the next
topic of learning the difference between AM and PM.
Exit Ticket:
- At the end of the day, each student will be asked to show the right
time on the clock provided by the teacher in order for the teacher to
be sure of how much understanding they gain from the lesson.
