What is Drillstring?
Connect rig to drill bit (rotated
by kelly or top-drive)
Main Component of Drillstring:
drill pipe, drill collar
Other components: heavy-
weight drill pipe (HWDP), jar,
stabilizer, reamer, shock sub,
dan bit sub
Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA):
lower end part of drill string
just above the drill bit which
includes drillcollars and the
other equipment
Functions of Drillstring
Main functions:
1. Suspend the bit and transmit the rotation from the kelly to the bit
2. Provide a stream to circulate drilling fluid from the surface to the bit
3. Lowering and Pulling the bit in the wellbore

Other functions:
4. Provide string stabilization in the wellbore to reduce vibration and bit
jumping
5. Ensure drillstring to handle pressure and formation fluid test
6. Ensure formation evaluation from drillpipe using logging tool in high
inclinatin (> 60deg)

Example:
1. Lubang 13500 feet akan dibor menggunakan rig yang menggunakan drill pipe baru 5 inch Grade E
dan X95, dimana beratnya 19.5 lb/ft dan diameter dalam 4.276 inch. Berat lumpur pada kedalaman
tersebut adalah 12.5 ppg. Bila panjang drill collar 984 feet dengan berat 157.374 lbs, Margin of Overpull
(MOP) dipakai 5000 lbs dan Safety Factor 90 %, tentukan:
a. Panjang maksimum drill pipe Grade E yang dapat digunakan?
b. Berat total drill collar dan drill pipe Grade E?
c. Panjang maksimum drill pipe Grade X95 yang dapat digunakan?
d. Panjang drill pipe Grade X95 yang dipakai dalam kasus ini?
e. Berat total pipa di Permukaan (DC + DP-E + DP - X95)?
f. MOP yang masih tersedia pada drill pipe X95?
g. Torsional strength maksimum pada drill pipe Grade E yang digunakan?
h. Torsional strength maksimum pada drill pipe Grade X95 yang digunakan?

(Keterangan : drill pipe dengan Grade yang lebih tinggi dipasang pada bagian atas dan Grade yang
lebih rendah dipasang di bagian bawah, persis diatas drill collar)
