A mobile operators network is called Public Land
Mobile Network. It is subdivided into three parts:

Base Station Subsystem (BSS)

Network Switching Subsystem (NSS)

Network Management Subsystem (NMS)

NSS(Network Switching System):-

Switching
Mobility Management
Subscriber Data base
Charging
The Network Switching Subsystem is responsible for
switching, mobility management, and traffic element, i.e.
that here network elements such as exchanges and data
bases can be found. The exchanges are responsible for
switching, while the data bases are used to keep track of the
current location of the subscriber and his mobile phone.
The NSS databases serve to locate mobile subscribers when
needed.
Question
What are the elements of NSS ?

MSC/VLR,GMSC
HLR/EIR/AC
EIR,SMS Centre
NMS(Network Management Sub System):-
* Fault Management

* Configuration Management

* Performance Management

The Network Management System supports the

operator in remote network supervision. Fault,
configuration, and performance management are
central tasks performed within the NMS.
NMS(Network Management Sub System).

Configuration Management:- Frequency allocation

Fault Management:-Monitoring of alarm & taking
action
Performance Management:-Measure statistics of
network on the basic of counters & disturbance
Question

What are the elements of NMS ?

Base Station Subsystem (BSS):-
Radio Resource
Management

Radio Link Management

The Base Station Subsystem is responsible for the link

between a mobile phone and a network exchange. The
radio interface must contain many functions to enable
mobile calls. For example user data must be protected
by ciphering of user data in the base station and the
mobile phone. The transmission must be reliable which
invokes error protection methods.

Question
How MSC & PSTN switch interface with each
other as PSTN works on 64Kbps & in mobile
communication 16Kbps is used?

Consider as a part of BSC

Normally at MSC side
Used to convert bit rate of traffic channel from 16 to 64 Kbps
Interface to BSC/MSC
