What is corrosion??
Corrosion involves the interaction (reaction)
between a metal or alloy and its environment.
Electrochemical reaction involving an anode
and a cathode.
Deterioration of a material because of reaction
with the environment
Corrosion is affected by the properties of both
the metal or alloy and the environment.
Eg. Rusting of Iron Eg. Green film of basic carbonate on
Copper
Classification of Corrosion
1) Dry or Chemical Corrosion
a)Corrosion by Oxygen
b)Corrosion by Hydrogen
c)Liquid Metal Corrosion
2) Wet or Electrochemical Corrosion
a) Galvanic Corrosion
b) Differential Aeration Corrosion
Factors that affect the rate of
corrosion

Temperature
Oxygen
Humidity
Chemical Salt
Physical State
Purity
Prevention of Corrosion

The huge annual loss due to corrosion is a

national waste and should be minimized.
Materials already exist which, if properly
used, can eliminate 80 % of corrosion loss.
Proper understanding of the basics of
corrosion and incorporation in the initial
design of metallic structures is essential
Methods to Control Corrosion
Design of structures
Material selection
Cathodic Protection
Anodic Protection
Alteration of environment

Protective Coatings
1) Cathodic Protection
a)Sacrificial Anodic Protection
b)Impressed Current Cathodic Protection
2)Anodic Protection
3)Protective Coatings
a) Inorganic Coatings

Conclusion
1. Corrosion is a naturally degenerative process and Corrosion
is most common problem for any metallic structure that are
used in different operating conditions and environments.
2. An understanding of basic principles of corrosion and their
application in the design and maintenance of engineering
systems result in the reducing losses considerably.
3. Corrosion can be stopped completely only under ideal
conditions But the attainment of ideal conditions is not
possible
4. Cathodic protection of variety of application over this
underground pipelines and storage tank are used to prevent
corrosion.
