Miscellaneous Problems in Hydraulic

Turbines

Lecture 39
Dr. Y. Mukkamala
P1. An axial flow hydraulic turbine has a net head of
23 m across it, and, when running at a speed of 150
rpm, develops 23 MW. The blade tip and hub
diameters are 4.75 m and 2.0 m respectively. If the
hydraulic efficiency is 93% and the overall efficiency
is 85%, calculate the inlet and outlet blade angles at
the mean radius assuming axial flow at outlet.
Soln. Data : He = 23 m, N = 150 rpm, Pshaft = 23 MW,
dt = 4.75 m, dh = 2 m, H = 93%, o = 85%, V3 = 0,

P2. A propeller turbine running at 50 rpm has a
runner diameter of 6 m and effective area of flow as
20 m2. The angle of the runner blades at inlet and
outlet are 150 and 20 respectively with the tangent
to the wheel. Assuming constant velocity of flow
calculate
(1) discharge
(2) theoretical power developed
(3) hydraulic efficiency
Soln. Data : N = 50 rpm, d = 6 m, Af = 20 m2, 2 =

P4. An inward flow reaction turbine has external and internal diameters
of 0.9 and 0.45 m, respectively. The turbine is running at 200 rpm and
the width of the turbine at inlet is 20 cm. The velocity of flow through
the runner is constant and is equal to 1.8 m/s. The guide blades make
an angle of 10 to the tangent of the wheel and the discharge at the
outlet of the turbine is radial. Draw the inlet and outlet velocity
triangles and determine :
1) the absolute velocity of water at the inlet of runner
2) the velocity of whirl at the inlet
3) the relative velocity at the inlet
4) the runner blade angles
5) width of the runner at the outlet
6) mass of water flowing through the runner per second
7) head at the turbine inlet
8) power developed and hydraulic efficiency of the turbine
