ABSTRACT
The use of parabolic solar cooker in regions with high
solar radiation like Malaysia promises an alternative for
cooking other than the fossil fuels and wood. This project
presents the development of an umbrella solar cooker
using sunlight as its energy source for cooking. This
cooker utilizes the parabola shape, one of the most
effective shapes for solar reflector and uses Aluminium
foil and mirror to reflect the radiation from the sun to a
focus point. The heat from this focal point then can be
utilised to heat a container with food in it for the purpose
of cooking. This cooker also provides a greenhouse effect
that improves heat retention and minimizes convection
loss by using a Glass Lid. Results obtained from the
experiments shows that the parabolic solar cooker
developed can be used to boil water at 87C.
OBJECTIVE
To introduce students about other cooking
method that use alternative energy (solar
energy)
To create a green technology solar cooker
and build students understanding in 3R
concept.
To investigate the relationship between
reflection, insulation and thermal efficiency.
To produce creative and criticize students.
To built a functional solar cooker which can
cook liquid or solid food based.
INTRODUCTION
Half the worlds people must
burn wood or dried dung to
cook their food.

Increased deforestation
resulting in removal of upper
soil layers is a major long-
term threat to food security
Nearly 1.2 billion people, a
fifth of the worlds
population, do not have
access to clean drinking
Over 1 million
children die yearly
because of un-boiled
drinking water.
In many places in the world, the most
important and time-consuming task women
and children accomplish each day is walking
miles across dry land to reach a life-sustaining
water supply for their families. About
700,000 children die every year from
.

Wood cut for cooking purposes

contributes to the 16 million
hectares of forest destroyed
annually
Half the worlds population is exposed to
indoor air pollution, mainly the result of
burning solid fuels for cooking and heating.

When used indoors, biomass cooking stoves lead to severe

health issues such as chronic lung diseases, acute
respiratory infections, cataracts, blindness, and adverse
effects on pregnancy. The main victims are women, who do
most of the housework, and young children, who are often
carried on the mother's back while she is cooking.

THE GREENHOUSE CONCENTRATION
EFFECT OF SUNLIGHT

HEAT
ABSORPTION INSULATION
G r e e n h o use
Effect- Glass Lid
The glazing (glass) in our design traps
the solar energy and increases the cooking
efficiency because the
UV light comes in and gets converted but it
doesnt allow the infrared out from the
greenhouse box, so it gets hotter and
hotter.

The overall cooking efficiency increases

with glazing especially under windy
conditions.
Concentration of
Sunlight
This cooker utilizes
the parabola shape.
The umbrella (bowl
shape) takes different
streams of sunlight
and directs them onto
one point (focal point)

Finding the Focal
Point
In our design, the focus point
of the suns rays comes
together at about 18.6 cm
above th), of the parabola.

FOCUS POINT = 18.6 cm

Heat Absorption
Absorb the light we paint the pot matte
black.

Blackpaintis good at absorbing visible light,

converting its energy into heat. It is also
usually good at absorbing infra-red rays.
When the pot becomes hot, the black surface
re-radiates energy as infra-red rays.

Thin metal pot made from tin Good heat

conductor and can transfer the heat more
quickly and evenly to the food.
