Public Health Program Development
Matthew Whaley Elementary School
Introduction
Purpose: Thomas Nelson Dental Hygiene
Students will work with a target population
and assess the needs of this population in
order to develop an oral health program.
Program development: conducted once a
week for a total of four (4) weeks. Each
presentation will be 30 minutes in length.
About the program development site:
Matthew Whaley Elementary school is
located in the city of Williamsburg.
According to multiple faculty members, the
building was built in 1931 and is all brick
and surrounded by the popular tourist
attraction Colonial Williamsburg.
Population summary: According to the
faculty the client population is very culturally
diverse. According to the school nurse,
Matthew Whaley has one of the highest
homeless student populations in the
Williamsburg area. Those students will
serve as our target group.

Assessment Evaluation
Goal: To introduce, educate, and familiarize
kindergarten students with oral health
Rationale: To lower the incidence of
restorative dental needs, by educating the
younger generation and their parents about
preventative oral health.
Objectives:
1. To familiarize kindergarten students with
the dental staff and dental tools
2.Introduce proper brushing and flossing

Lesson one: Welcome to the Dental office
Pre-test
Introduce Eugene Green
Distinguish between the role of the dental staff
Explain the process of a dental check up
Demonstrate proper dental check up behavior
Lesson two: How Does Brushing and Flossing
Make our Teeth Happy?
Explain the purpose of brushing and flossing
Demonstrate the proper ways to brush and
floss
Assess the students ability to use proper
brushing and flossing techniques
Lesson three: Good Food, Bad Food
Describe the harmful effects of certain foods on
the dentition
Explain to children how to identify foods that
are good for the dentition as compared to those
that are harmful
Demonstrate to children that they can make
healthy choices
Lesson Four: What Have we Learned about
Oral Health?

Test the students dental knowledge using
jeopardy style game
