INTRODUCTION
Our paper mainly concerns in this aspect
to produce
electricity with the lowest power per kWh
with no-fuel
and delivers power at round the clock
without any
pollution at 88% efficiency with 750Kw
rated value.

Hence we go for Ocean energy with Giant

Sea Snake (Pelamis Wave Energy
WAVE ENERGY
Wave energy is a concentrated form
of solar energy. The Sun produces
temperature differences across the
globe, causing winds that blow over
the ocean surface. These cause
ripples.

When a wave reaches shallow water

(roughly when the depth of the water
is less than half a wavelength), it
slows down, its wavelength decreases
and it grows in height, which leads to
breaking.
REASONS OF LOSS OF
ENERGY
The major losses of energy are through breaking and
through friction with the sea bed, so only a fraction
of the resource reaches the shore.
A wave carries both kinetic and gravitational
potential energy.
The total energy of a wave depends on two factors:

Its height H and its period T. The power carried by

the wave is proportional to H*H and to T, and is
usually given in watt per meter of incident wave
front.
P=(H)^2*(T/2) KW/m.
PELAMIS WAVE ENERGY
CONVERTER
The Pelamis Wave Energy Converter also known
as GIANT SEA SNAKE was developed by Pelamis
Wave Power Ltd.

This is worlds first medium scale, commercial

and running successfully wave/ocean energy
power plant producing 1,407 MW/year with a
rated capacity of 750kw at a efficiency of
88% .

Depending on the wave resource, machines will

produce on average 25-40% of the full rated
output over the course of a year. Each machine
can provide sufficient power to meet the
OPERATION
The Pelamis machine is an offshore wave energy converter,
operating in water depths greater than 50m. The machine
consists of a series of semi-submerged cylindrical sections
linked by hinged joints.

As waves pass along the length of the machine, the sections

move relative to one another. The wave-induced motion of the
sections is resisted by hydraulic cylinders which pump high
pressure oil through hydraulic motors via smoothing hydraulic
accumulators.

The hydraulic motors drive electrical generators to produce

electricity. Electricity from all the joints is fed down a single
umbilical cable to a junction on the sea bed. Several devices
can be connected and linked to shore through a single seabed
cable.
PRINCIPLES
The Pelamis is an attenuating wave energy converter
designed with survivability at the fore. The machine's long thin
shape and low drag profile minimises hydrodynamic forces,
namely inertia, drag, and slamming, which in large waves give
rise to large loads.

The machine responds to the curvature of the waves rather

than the wave height.

The Pelamis has a novel joint configuration used to induce a

tunable cross-coupled resonant response.

Control of the restraint applied to the joints allows this resonant

response to be turned-up in small seas where capture
efficiency must be maximised or turned-down to limit loads
and motions in survival conditions
ABOUT PWC
The device is a semi-submerged structure
composed of cylindrical sections linked by
hinged joints.

Current units are 140 m long and 3.5 m in

diameter with 3 power conversion modules
per machine. Each unit is rated at 750 kW.

The units provide hands free operation.

OFF SHORE
INFRASTRUCTURE
The offshore infrastructure consists of three main
components
which are necessary to install:

1.Mooring spreads
2.Subsea power cables and
3.Latch assembly

The latch assembly provides a single point to

connect the pelamis units to both the main
moorings and the power cables.
HOW DOES PELAMIS MAKE
ELECTRICITY
As waves travel down the length of the machine the
structure bends around the joints.

This motion pushes hydraulic rams that pump high-

pressure fluid through hydraulic motors.

The hydraulic motors drive generators to produce

electricity.

Power from all the joints is fed down to a single

umbilical cable to a junction on the sea bed.
RELIABILITY
Unlike many generators, which lose all
generating capacity through single
point failures, Pelamis has been
designed to be a fault tolerant system.

Pelamis continue generating electricity

safely though multiple failures within its
systems.
LIQUIDS AND
POLLUTANTS

PWP uses hydraulic fluid which

is biodegradable in the marine
environment.

PWP also uses biodegradable

transformer fluid.
ADVANTAGES OF PELAMIS
POWER
Pelamis offers technological, economic and environmental
advantages including:

1. Pelamis power displaces above 2000 tons of carbon

dioxide emissions per year
2. Avoids pollution
3. No running cost
4. Minimum environmental impact.
5. Plenty of space plus high 'power-density'.
6. Survivability - 100 year wave.
7. 100% available technology
8. Hydraulic Power Take Off.
9. Power smoothing.
10. Tunable.
CHALLENGES
Disturbance or destruction of marine life
(including changes in the distribution and
types of marine life near the shore) .

Possible threat to navigation from collisions

Degradation of scenic ocean front view.

FUTURE OF PELAMIS
WEC
As with every previous generating technology,
PWP expects costs to significantly fall with
continued deployment into the market.

PWPs onward development program will focus on

driving down the cost of energy produced by the
system in order to make the Pelamis WEC fully
competitive with wind energy and other renewable
technologies.
CONCLUSION !!!

o In India, there are many power plants producing

electricity. For production of electricity tonnes of
coal is used but there is no land requirement
and no fuel cost.

o There is only need to invest amount for

installation and runs at very low operating cost.

o Electricity can be provided all day without

interruption.

o So compared to all power plants this the best
