EVALUATION

QUESTION
Q1. In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Masthead is positioned at the
top of the magazine, it is also
big which is following
conventions

A consistent colour scheme

throughout the article both
representing the genre of the
magazine

Both models have direct mode of

address with the audience, they are
also a medium close up that are big
images taking up majority of the room
on the cover.

The background is both black and

white with accents of the main colour
of the magazine this gives more of an
attraction and focal point for the
audience on glace

Very big masthead and main cover

line with very little cover lines around
the picture something very different
from the normal conventions.

Easy to read font that fits with the genre and stands off the page .

Barcodes are on the bottom right hand corner they are quite small and out of the way
so they dont draw to much attention to the or fill up too much space, the barcode is on the
front cover in order to follow codes of convention and legal reasons stating barcodes need to
be
included on a magazine front cover
There is still direct address
however my magazine has
a forward facing female
model in a close up shot .

Masthead comes in behind

of the main image, instead
of fading out or going in
front of it.

Main and secondary cover

line cross over the main
image

Use of a puf

Lots of cover lines

Through a medium closeup for my main imageI was able to showthrough mise en
scene the links thatmy main image hasto the genre of POP PUNK .Like the VIBE front cover
In the main image, the artists is giving direct address to the audience by looking directly into the camera
which follows the conventions of a magazine.
Something that difered to theROCK SOUND cover I compared my frontcover to was the
amount of cover lines.

On my frontcover I have the very little cover lines so that due to it being a first edition magazine I found
it was more appropriate to have most of the space covered by an enticing picture in order to appeal new
buyers and due to my target audience being teens they dont want to see a lot of writing and a lot of
information.
Masthead is positioned at the top of the magazine, with large font following all code of conventions
regarding the masthead. The reason for this is that would can see the masthead and what magazine it is
when stacked on the shelf in the shops, this is further to extend the publication of the magazine and the
appeal to the target audience. Another way ' have followed the codes and conventions of a traditional
magazine is by using a consistent colour scheme throughout the article, with the use of pink and black
they are both harmonious colours and subtly complement each other making it more pleasing to the eye

The main cover line on the front cover of my magazine is positioned across the lower part of the main
image. I did this as the artist I had on the front cover is a new an
upcoming artist so readers mightnot know who she is. This is diferentto the ROCK SOUND
cover as there main cover line is to theside, the way they chose to make theremain cover line stand out
was to have it in a alternative colour to the other cover lines. The
artist on thecover of ROCK SOUND is well known, so doingthis on mymagazine wouldnt
have been as efective.

Another similarity that has to beused in all magazines due to laws and conduct, Barcodes, dates, and
issue numbers all have to be included due to legal obligations, bothmine and all other magazines will
have these somewhere on the main cover

Editors Review

For my contents page Iadded the masthead of mymagazine and the title contents to the page
following conventions of a magazine similar to the contents page of ROCK SOUND. For the
Features element of my contents page Ichose to only includethe articles
that were mentioned on the front cover of my magazine in the cover lines.

I also made certain page numbers bolder to empathises the main articlesof the magazine.

This diferent tothe ROCK SOUND contents page as there was more written content about
what
was include in themagazine. Further, I alsoadded two additional images to the
contents page showing otherartists that were goingto feature, like ROCK SOUND magazine I
also put page references next to theimage so that the reader is ableto connect the
image to the story.

Like ROCK SOUND I chose to have one larger main image onthe contents
page and then at the bottom include further smaller secondary images.
This however is not typical of an R&B magazine majority of the contents pages are more
minimalistic and
only include one image and a small amount of features.
However I chose to go against this as I felt have moreinformation would inform the reader on
the style and genre of themagazine and enable me to communicate the contents of it. This I
felt was key for a firstissue of a magazine.

Unlike the ROCK SOUND contents page I addedmy magazines social media accounts and a
website link to the contents page, I thought that this would be a useful and appropriateway of
promoting the magazine further. As my magazine is directed towards a younger audience Ifelt
that this would work well asan additional element to the magazines contents page.
Drop Cap
By-line
Coloured page accents

colourful border
2 pictures of artist
Main text
I used 2 pictures
instead of o1 large
image of the artist

Use of coloured
triangles in order to
make the page appeal
to my younger
audience and also my
genre
Clear separation
between both of my
pages whereas on the
Manaj one there is a
cross over and
continuation of the
picture.
The double page spread that Iproduce for the magazine follows conventions
as I used the key features need to create a professional looking article. Like
ROCK SOUND Hayley William from PARAMORE double page spread Iuse a
large headline beingthe name of the artist LENNOX ROSE.

Using the same format as my front cover . As the artist is new, having her
name as the main focus on the page as readers might not be aware of who
sheis. Where as theNMEheadline it is some what hidden behind the main
image as she is a big star and everyone knows who she is and would prefer
to see the picture of her.
.
In addition to this I added a pull quote under the headline toattract the
reader an
give information on what could be included inthe article. line informing the
reader on whowrote the article.
Much like the NME and ROCK SOUD article I also decided to do a question
answer article as it felt more applicable to my target audience, it is more like
a conversation creating a more chilled atmosphere than a free flowing would.
Also by choosing Q&A It made it more interesting allowing me to direct to
interesting information that the audience would want to know straight away
without reading between other ines of unnecessary information.
WHO WOULD
THE AUDIENCE
BE FOR YOUR
MEDIA
PRODUCT? AND
HOW DID YOU
ATTRACT
THEM?
My magazine would have a predominantly female audience
of the ages of 14-19 in the brackets of working class/ middle
class. The typical person who would buy this magazine
would be a person who is very fashion forward and has a
unique style and will live in a pair of ripped skinny jeans/
shorts or a black short skirt with fish net tights a band tee
and a leather jacket with matching leather boots. They have
fun coloured hair and are very bubbly and sociable, meeting
people at concerts is how they make friends and love to
surround themselves with music and people who have
similar taste in music as them. They are very busy and
always like o keep on the move due to still being in
education and having a part time job, as their parents wont
keep paying for concert tickets so they have to find a way of
funding themselves , that and balancing homework is
difficult so normally the homework takes the backstage and
the pop punk kids arent as intellectual but love to express
through either art or music. They want to one day be
covered in tattoos and piercings in order to show there
personality in anyway they can, but deep down they also
like pop music and can jam to some very mainstream songs
that everyone loves, so that why they arent called emos
like the hardcode rock listeners, they are approachable and
come of as very strong and loud but super girly and sweet.

These 4 people are suitable to buy my magazine as
they are interested in pop punk already and enjoy
tracking and looking at the latest gossip about the
artists. They like to read and enjoy the free gifts given
in the magazines they previously look at and they take
fashion and style influences from the models in my
magazine.
My front, cover and double page spread look as if
they are all one magazine . The typical pop punk
colours like pink and black fits with the genre, also
the models facial expressions and body language
of the pages creates a rebellious vibe which is very
pop punk. This attracts the target audience and a
punk social group who are extroverts and enjoy
the music genre I have explored.
Language & Colour scheme

The type of language appeals to the common colloquialism of

teenagers nowhere days using words that is in there very day
speech, I also tried to include text speech and abbreviations
in order to give a more easy read to the target audience I was
trying to get to read.

This language is very informal and sounds like a conversation,

as pop punk is a very unstructured music genre known for
going against traditions and rebelling against stereotypes.

I have used play on words such as PRETTY IN PUNK instead of

PRETTY IN PINK this inspired the colour scheme of pink and
black, the black traditionally tied to the more punk gothic side
of the genre and then the pink adding the girly pop vibe into
my magazine, also stereotyping the colour to pink which is
my target audience hopefully making them want to buy my
magazine.
Ethnicity
I decided for my magazine that I wanted my target an audience of
a variety of different ethnicities, to break stereotypes of the pop
punk is ( predominantly white.) Being that most artists in this
genre are white, pop punk was an old genre that is re emerging
back into the world, so this was a perfect opportunity for me to
subvert the very white washed genre and bring in more
ethnicities as it re gains popularity. I felt by doing this I could
reach a wider audience and wouldnt be singling one ethnicity as
my audience.
Gender
The majority of artists currently in the genre of pop punk is male
(dominantly). Due to this at first I was going to continue with
the pattern of male due to them already being the hype of pop
punk. However I felt it needed a change and having a magazine
mainly focusing on female is a new and innovative idea. So in
order to attract my target audience gender of females, I used a
female on my front cover although it was intentional to attract
females it could also attract men as they will find the females
attractive and buy the magazine for that reason.
Age
The people that I photographed in my magazine it so clear that they are
young and perfectly slot into my target audience, making the audience
feel a sense of security and allows them to relate to my magazine. In
addition to this younger people like pop punk music as it is a genre that
has a lot of new young an influential artists . Within my magazine I have
made sure that I include social media to draw the attention of my target
audience, as the younger audience are massively influenced by social
media. Creating an innovative way to reach a new audience.
Social Class
The social class represented in my media product are mostly working
and middle class. The audience is more likely to be in the same social
class band and have a part time job, having a very small disposable
income to purchase the magazine. The price of the magazine will be
quite small as the social class I am focusing on will like a more
reasonable priced magazine.
