) How does your

media product
represent particular
social groups?
During the research and planning stage of my
magazine, the audience research was a very vital
process to make sure I represented a particular social
group. This gave me a clear indication of the type of
audience that would buy my magazine and have a
huge impact on the type of genre my magazine would
become, and the type of style my overall magazine
would have. After I did research on Google Forms, I
decided that my magazine genre should be hip- hop. I
decided to include a male hip hop artist on the front
cover because there are not many female hip hop
artists because it is a predominantly male audience.
Hip hop is also a genre where female listeners
would happily listen to a male hip hop artist as
much as a female artist. I was aiming at an audience
between the ages of 18 35, even though my artist is
16 years old, I believe he will attract an older
audience as much as a younger audience.
I also believe with my filter, it adds a new look on Hip
hop magazine covers and looks like a hip hop artist
through his facial expressions and clothing. I decided
that my artist should show little emotion and look
straight at the camera or slightly to the left or right
depending on the position of the camera. I thought
my artist should wear casual clothing to adopt the
simple style of Hip hop clothing that draws in a
casual hip hop audience. When taking my photos, I
took into account the lighting, framing and stylisation
and incorporated it into my work to make it look the
best photos I could manage. I think I managed to
reflect a good looking Hip hop photo into my
magazine which looks unique and original, but also
keeping in line with the conventions of a stereotypical
Hip hop looking magazine to attract a similar
audience who like casual and formal clothing,
represented in the genre of Hip hop.
Hip hop clothing varies for different artists. Some
wear casual clothing which includes a hoodie and
others wear baggie clothes. Some even have signature
clothing like Pharrell Williams Hat. I decided I would not
have baggy clothing and went for something simple
but still keeping in line with the conventions of Hip
hop clothing. I wanted to have my model (Charlee)
wear a golden chain around his neck for aesthetic
features. I also made my model wear a het to keep in
line with normal conventions of a Hip hop magazine. I
think with keeping a normal clothing design it can
connect with a simple audience who wear the same
clothes. I think my model doesnt keep in normal
conventions but does look simple and casual which is
what I was aiming form.
I think my magazine represents the social group of Hip
hop. I feel that my magazine reaches out towards an
older, more sophisticated audience who are
enthusiastic about the art form. I feel that my
magazine represents the audience through the clothing
and design.
