Korean War and

the Peace Talks

By: Devonica Carrasco
Korean War
Began on June 25, 1950
North Korea invaded South Korea
United States called their military to secure them from North Korea
Soon the U.S. and South Korean forces were pushing into North
Korea and toward that nations border with China.
In 1951, hundreds of thousands of troops from the Peoples
Republic of China began heavy assaults against the American and
South Korea forces.
The war eventually bogged down into a battle of attrition.
Weapons Used During this War
The same weapons used in WWII by the US Army Infantry & US Marine
Corps were used in this war.
First war to utilize the jet aircraft
Some of the first helicopters
These helicopters were used for medical issues
Fighter aircraft were used air-to air combat against other fighters
Bombers were used to attack the ground forces & buildings
Transport aircraft used to transport troops or equipment across distances
Reconnaissance aircraft used for surveying or observation missions
Jet Aircraft Helicopter

The Causes of this War
Most Koreans wanted unification
North Korea wanted to expand its borders and communism into the
south.
North Korea pushed this war by crossing the border.
South Korea was defending itself against a North Korean attack
The Soviets occupied the North, and the US occupied the South.
Korea had been under Japanese occupation during WWII after
Japan had lost the Allied forces and the Soviets agreed to divide
Korea along the 38th parallel.
Effects of this War
The war cost the lives of millions of Koreans and Chinese
Also over 50,000 Americans were killed
It had been a frustrating war for Americans because they were used to forcing the
unconditional surrender of their enemies.
In July 1953, all sides of this war put conflicts aside and signed an agreement to
end this bloody harming war.
A new border between North and South Korea was drawn, which gave South
Korea some additional territory and demilitarized the zone between the two
nations.
Many people didnt understand why the United States didnt expand this war to
World War III.
Results of this War
The US wanted to contain communism; USSR and China wanted communism to expand.
In July 1953, all sides of this war put conflicts aside and signed an agreement to end this
bloody harming war.
There was no victory, but in process for peace talks
North Korea and South Korea remain divided
Korea had been under Japanese occupation during WWII after Japan had lost the Allied
forces and the Soviets agreed to divide Korea along the 38 th parallel.
The 38th parallel was shown as a political border in 1951-1953.
Tensions still exist today
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Eisenhower made a promise to go to Korea.
He wanted to try to break the diplomatic logjam at the peace
talks
Began give the public a hint that the United States might plan to
use the nuclear arsenal to break the military stalemate in Korea.
Allowed the Nationalist Chinese government on Taiwan to begin
harassing air raids on mainland China.
To speed up the peace process he put pressure on his South
Korean ally to drop some of their demands.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Peace Talks
Korean peace talks were moved from Kaesong to Panmunjom on October 25,
1951.
This relocation was decided in the terms of the Panmunjom Security Agreement,
signed earlier on October 22.
The Korean Peoples Army and the Chinese Peoples Volunteer Army were
involved in the peace talks
They negotiated with the United Nations Command, which was headed by the
U.S.
Peace Talks
The Panmunjom peace talks were guided by a five-item agenda.
Item one was the agenda itself, being agreed upon beforehand.
The second item was the Military Demarcation Line and Demilitarized Zone.
The Panmunjom Peace talks established the guidelines for the future possible interactions between North
and South Korea.
Also made Armistice ending gunfire between the two sides
Stayed focused on ending the conflict
This resolved major differences between the many nations involved.
This also allowed each nation to have some of their requests met.
Panmunjom Peace Talks ended the Korean War.
Agreements for Peace
Still No Peace
The agreement was NOT a peace treaty
North Korea and South Korea are still technically at war
General Nam Il (signatory on behalf of North Korea) said that it was
a made to be a ceasefire until a settlement for peace was made.
Peace settlement never came
Tensions between the two nations are still high
The border between North Korea and South Korea is the border
with the most military watching over it in the world.
