COMPETENCY 1

Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior

Alicia Mauldin
MAKING ETHICAL DECISIONS
1. Making ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code
of Ethics, relevant laws and regulations, models for ethical decision-
making, ethical conduct of research, and additional codes of ethics as
appropriate to context.
Practicing confidentiality regarding the clients and the privacy of the shelter.
Respecting the clients right to stay or remove themselves from their
situations.
A client came into the shelter after seeking services and then within less than 24
hours she decided that she found an alternative solution finding help and left the
shelter. Although the staff was not a 100% comfortable with her choice, at the end
of the day it is her choice and we are there to empower her not judge her for her
decisions.
USE REFLECTION AND SELF-
REGULATION
Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and
maintain professionalism in practice situation.
Keeping track of daily activities at the agency through daily journals for class
Constructing written logs of interactions with clients such as intake reports or
incident reports for issues with clients in the shelter
There was an issue with a client in the shelter not being able to be reached when
her child needed to be picked up from school. The end result was that the night
supervisor had to take her personal vehicle to pick up the child, and once they
returned the mother was still not at the shelter. This breaks rules that the client
agreed to in the shelter handbook. Therefore she had to be written up which
involved paperwork to have written documentation of the incident to ensure that
it was handled professionally.
DEMONSTRATE PROFESSIONAL
DEMEANOR
Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior; appearance; and oral,
written and electronic communication.
Meeting with clients, as well as interacting with clients at the shelter
Practice interviewing skills learned in social work courses
On my first day I was able to sit in on an intake with a client, although I was not
interviewing the client myself I was still sitting in on the intake and the client was
speaking to me as well. I had to keep in mind tools that I learned within my
courses such as my body language when speaking with a client.
Also have to keep these tools in mind when working with the clients in the shelter
TECHNOLOGY
Use technology ethically and appropriately to facilitate practice outcomes
Working with the agencies data base to keep up records
Interpreting messages through google translate for non-English speaking
clients
Monitoring cameras at the shelter to ensure safety of the clients
Working with a Spanish speaking client there was a language barrier whenever
the Latina advocate was unavailable, being able to use google translate to
communicate with the client and meet her needs
SUPERVISION AND
CONSULTATION
Use supervision and consultation to guide professional judgement and
behavior
Meeting with my supervisor to go over the handbook and important policies
and procedures.
Spending time with different workers in the agency to get an understanding
of different parts of the agency, such as the court advocate and the Latina
advocate
Any question I had there was someone in the office that was willing to
answer my question and show me what I needed to do next in whatever task
I was working on
I also scheduled my weekly meeting with my advisor to meet on Mondays.
