INTRODUCTION OF CHINA

COUNTRY

China is a country in East Asia bordering the East

China Sea, Korea Bay, and South China Sea.
Neighboring countries include 14sovereignstates.The
terrain is diverse in China with mostly mountains
along with deserts in the west and plains in the east.
Principal rivers flow west to east including the Yangtze
and Huang He rivers. The government system is a
communist state; the chief of state is the president, and
the head of government is the premier. China has a
market-based system, changed from a centrally planned
system in the 1970s. China is a member of the Asia-
Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Asia-
Pacific Trade Agreement
CURRENT
China POLITICAL
is an industrializing SITUATION
nation, growing economically,
socially, and politically. Although China is currently the
second largest economy in the world after the United
States, its history dates thousands of years older. Chinas
rich history dates back to around 3,000 years ago through
documented ancient writings. Modern archaeological
studies show evidence of even more ancient origins in a
culture that thrived between 2500 and 2000 B.C in what
are now central China and the lower Huang He (Yellow
River) Valley of north China (CountryReports). Although
China has around the same land area as the United States,
but Chinas current population is approximately 1.34 billion
people. China is mainly made up of the ethnic group of Han
Chinese, which accounts for 92 percent of the population.
Additional ethnic groups include Korean, Tibetan, Mongol,
Hui, Buyi, Manchu, Miao, Zhuang and Uygur, which account
for 8 percent of the population. Languages in China include
Standard Chinese or Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghaiese,
and various other languages like Korean, Japanese, Hakka,
and Vietnamese. The total literacy rate of the population is
92.2 percent, with the male population literate at 96
percent, and the female population literate at 88.5
percent.
In conclusion, though China is growing steadily economically,
socially, its current political situation is what is holding China back
from a great spring forward. Ma says, Perhaps one day, freedom
for 1.3 billion Chinese citizens will arrive, but until then, promoting
liberation from the chains of Chinese communist authoritarianism
will remain a slog. China will continue to grow, but analysts say
that Chinas growth rate is beginning to decrease in a world with
powerful democratic nations such as the United States, and
countries in the EU. While China currently has one of the worlds
leading economies, without a fundamental political change from its
restrictive communism to more liberal democracy. With its current
political state, China is limiting its capabilities, and will not be able
to reach its full potential or power.
NATURAL RESOURECE

The prodigious land area of ancient China harbored

resources like coal, drinking water, numerous minerals
and plant and animal life. China is the biggest producer
of salt on Earth, with 17 million tons annually. There are
760 billion tons of coal located in China's Shanxi region,
and the 3 trillion cubic meters of rainfall and river water
rank 6th in the world. China ranks first in the world in
the minerals graphite, tungsten, titanium, antimony,
magnesite, pyrite, barite, flourite, zinc, rare earth, plaster
stone and vanadium. China ranks high in the world for
many other metals, such as molybdenum, iron, lead and
others. Despite the abundance of natural resources
contributing to agriculture, China's huge population
reduces the abundance of some of its reserves.
The abundance of iron in ancient China contributed to its
advancements in iron-making. China was centuries more
advanced than Europe in the same period in metal-
making, where bronze weapons were exchanged for iron
to make better weapons. Iron's hardness necessitated the
construction of better blast furnaces, which eventually led
to the Chinese making steel weapons by adding carbon to
strengthen the iron.
CULTURE DEFERENT

: 1. Worker Safety
While Chinese workplace safety standards are still not
nearly up to western standards, Bangladeshi workers face
even greater dangers. Although certain issues definitely
exist in both countries inadequate ventilation and lack of
personal protective equipment, for example the structural
integrity of factory buildings themselves is far worse in
Bangladesh

This can be attributed to a number of reasons. For

starters China may have nearly 5.6 times the
population as Bangladesh, but it also has roughly
65 times more land. This means there is much
less of a reason for factories in China to build up
they can spread out much more easily.
WORKER RIGHTS
In light of recent events such as the Rana Plaza tragedy,
Bangladesh has passed some legislation designed to
strengthen workers rights. These laws include provisions
that protect workers who wish to unionize, prevent gender
and disability discrimination, and establish welfare and
retirement funds. The extent to which these laws actually
improve the lives of laborers is dependent on how well they

comprehensive set of labor laws which include requirements for
minimum wages and overtime pay, maximum working hour limits,
and anti-discrimination clauses. No protections are provided for
labor unions, and such organization is generally frowned upon as a
matter of cultural norms. As in Bangladesh, Chinese labor laws are
only effective when enforced, and violations rarely come to light
unless high profile retailers or brands (re: Apple) are implicated.

Truthfully, Bangladesh and China may technically be at a stalemate

on this issue. In reality, the mobility of Chinas workforce and the
sheer number of factories offers Chinese laborers more rights: if
conditions at one factory are unbearable, it can be easier to find new
employment opportunities elsewhere for a Chinese worker than it
may be for a comparable Bangladeshi worker.
WORKING HOURS AND
PAY
In terms of monthly wages, it should
come as no surprise that Chinas
booming economy is providing
laborers with a minimum wage that
ranges from $100-200 USD
depending on the province and city.
This is of course not a kings
ransom, unless it is compared to the
minimum wage for a garment
worker in Bangladesh: $38 USD per
month.Working hours are capped at
the same maximum of 48 hours per
week in both countries. However in
both countries it is also remarkably
common for these laws to be
ignored completely. So common, in
fact, that most factories have two
sets of payroll records one that
shows actual hours worked, and one
that conforms neatly to labor laws.

CHINA EXPORT PRODUCTS

Import Goods From China

China Export Products or "Made In China" labeled
goods are everywhere in the Western World from
jeans to television sets. Historically, China's exports
to other nations were mainly petroleum, textiles, and
clothing. More recently, the export portfolio has
increased to leather travel goods, toys and games,
electronics and machinery and footwear. China's re-
exports (to export goods that were previously
imported from another country, especially after
reprocessing them) make up the bulk of the China
Export Products today.
IMPORT FROM CHINA
BECOME AN
ENTREPRENEUR
Import from China is a guide designed to help you
become an entrepreneur. It is full of independent
information and advice on how to start a business
by importing from China.
I am a Hong Kong born, Canadian raised
and educated immigrant working in the
United States as a marketing executive
within the technology industry. As I grew
interested in becoming an entrepreneur by
importing from China, I quickly realized that
it required a lot of time and research. What
surprised me was the lack of quality
guidance on the Internet for Import from
China topics.

The bulk of my searches on the Internet

brought back websites of companies trying
to sell me something with vague
information on starting a small business and
little reliable advice on Import from China.
