BITUMEN:

A black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons

obtained naturally or as a residue from
petroleum distillation .
BITUMEN AND PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS:

Bitumen is available in variety of grades.

specifications vary to meet the needs of
consuming industries and are based on a
series of physical tests that define the
safety, physical properties and durability
of bitumens.
TYPES OF BITUMEN:

Penetration graded bitumen.

Viscosity graded bitumen.
Cut-back bitumen.
Fluxed bitumen.
Asphalt etc.,
Use of bitumen in road construction:

The primary use (70%) of asphalt/bitumen is in road

construction, where it is used as the glue or binder
mixed with aggregate particles to create asphalt
concrete. Its other main uses are for bituminous
waterproofing products, including production of roofing
felt and for sealing flat roofs
ADVANTAGE OF BITUMEN IN ROAD
CONSTRUCTION:

The bituminous pavement produces less sound than

concrete pavement .

The wear and tear to the vehicle tires are also less from
bituminous pavements compared to concrete
pavements .

The failure in bituminous is gradual, compared to

conctrete pavement .
