Grishma Ritu or Summer
As human life changes, nature changes herself from winter to spring, from
spring to summer from summer to rains and so on. In this cyclic order of
change in seasons generally Baisakh and Jaistha are considered two summer
months in Bengal. To us summer is the first season. It comes at the beginning
of the Bengali New Year and covers the month of April and may.
With the appearance of summer we observe remarkable changes in nature.
The sun emits scorching fire. People are to suffer from unbearable heat. The
earth gets very dry and cracks are seen here and there. Ponds and Wells dry
up. Trees and plants wither and become colorless. Nature looks very poor and
lifeless. There is scarcity of drinking water in the villages and urban areas.
People are attacked with diseases like Cholera, Typhoid and Dysentery. The
farmers are in dejected mood and invoke the rain god. Violent storms
occasionally break out and cause great damage.
In summer, there are vacations in schools and colleges. . There are heavy
rushes of people in Darjeeling, Nainital, Simla for passing summer days in
those hill stations. The summer in West-Bengal is best known for Poila
Baishakh and Panchise Baisakh. The first day of Baihakh is the beginning of
the New Year. It is a great day of festival to the Bengalese. We celebrate the
birthday of our great poet Tagore on Panchise Baishakh. In Bengal summer is
the season of palatable fruits. Mangoes, Lichis, Jackfruits are available in
summer.
Varsha Ritu or Monsoon

The summers in West Bengal are followed by rains. The

monsoon season stretches on from June to September. The
average annual rainfall varies in the different parts of the state.
While the northern region receives heavy rainfall, ranging about
200 to 400 cm, the coastal areas, Gangetic plains and the central
parts of the state receives about 150-200 cm of rainfall.

The western plateau of West Bengal receive low rainfall, around

100 to 125 cm. Drought is a common occurrence in the Bankura
and Purulia districts. With the arrival of the monsoons, low
pressures in the Bay of Bengal region generally leads to storms
in the coastal areas. Rainy season is succeeded by a short
autumn, beginning from October and ending by the middle of
November

Sharad Ritu or Autumn

Autumn season is experienced in West Bengal for a very short period, from beginning of
October to the middle of November. The skies remain clear in the autumn and temperature
begins to gradually decrease. High pressure is replaced by low pressure and due to its
influence the retreating monsoon blow over the state. Troughs of low pressure are often
developed near the Bay of Bengal, resulting cyclonic storms. These are known as Ashwiner
Jhar and often cause huge destruction. This season is a festive season in West Bengal due to
the celebration of Durga puja, Lakshmi Puja and Diwali.
Hemant Ritu or Pre-winter

The Pre winter is one of the most important seasons

of India. This season comes after the rainy season. Pre
Winter stays in our country for about two months. The
whole atmosphere is cold in this season. Nights are
long and days are short. The cold winds blow all the
time. The sky often remains clear. Sometimes it rains
during this season. Dew drops at night. There is fog in
the morning. The cold wind is the chief agent of this
season. But the pre winter season has its own
importance. It is very useful for health. People like to
walk in the morning. They find fresh air to breathe in.
During summer we cannot work for long. But in pre
winter we can go on working for hours and hours. We
do not get tired easily. There is no problem of
mosquitoes in this season. People do not fall ill as
they do in summer. Besides, dew drops on the grass
look like pearls. This season is very important for
farmers, too.

Shita Ritu or Winter

Winter is the most favorite season in West-Bengal. It is the fifth

season. It comes after late autumn; its span is for two months -
from Middle of December to Middle of February. It is cold, but
not so cold as it is cold in other states like North Bihar, UP,
Delhi, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh atc.
The misty mornings of winter make us lazing in bed. The sun
rises through the foggy weather. Nature looks very dull and
lifeless. The villages are colder than urban areas.
The rich people wear warm clothes to keep off the cold. It is the
poor who are the worst sufferers. They can't buy warm clothes.
They used to light fires and sit around it to warm them. The
farmers are, however, happy. Paddy is harvested in this season.
Winter is the season of abundance. Markets overflow with green
vegetables, fishes and fruits. The lovely white cauliflowers,
green cabbages, golden oranges make our mouth water, winter
has her floral charm too. The Chrysanthemums, the Dahlias and
the Marigolds are the flowers of the season. As nature smiles
with flowers and vegetables, the young folk move out of doors
towards picnic spots.
Winter is full of festivals. The Nabanna, Pousparvan, Saraswati
Puja, Christmas- all fall in this season. It is the season of Cricket,
the game of the kings! The Zoo, the Botanic, the Museums are
overcrowded at this time.
Vasant Ritu or Spring

Spring season is the best and most favorite season of the year.
People (especially kids) are fond of this season because of its
beauty, slight cool and comfortable nature. It is the queen of
all seasons of the year and considered as the favorite season of
the poets. It comes after winter season and before summer
season. It begins from the month of March and ends in the
month of May. On the arrival of spring season everything on
the earth looks adorable and charming. All the trees gets new
clothes in the form of new leaves, flower starts blooming and
fragrancing, birds start dancing and singing on the tree
branches, sky becomes clear, cloudless and blue, fields
become full of green grasses and other so many changes occur
in the nature.
Spring season is the season of flowers and festivals thus brings
lots of joy and happiness. Colorful and beautiful flowers
completely win the heart and green grasses give us a nice
ground to walk in the garden. Beautiful flying butterflies catch
our eyes often in the morning and evening. Day and night both
