Global Warming

Global warming is the term used to describe a gradual increase in the

average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and its oceans, a change
that is believed to be permanently changing the Earths climate.
The average temperature of the Earth has risen between 0.4 and 0.8 C
over the past 100 years.

The increased volumes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases

released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, agriculture, and
other human activities, are believed to be the primary sources of the
global warming that has occurred over the past 50 years. Scientists from
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate carrying out global warming
research have recently predicted that average global temperatures could
increase between 1.4 and 5.8 C by the year 2100. Changes resulting from
global warming may include rising sea levels due to the melting of the
polar ice caps, as well as an increase in occurrence and severity of storms
and other severe weather events.
Fighting Global Warming

The devastating impacts of climate change are clear. Our world is

warmer than ever before, and people and wildlife are already suffering
the consequences. But thats nothing compared to what were leaving
future generations if these trends continue. Its time to stop the
destruction.
Fossil fuels coal, oil and, natural gas are major contributors to
climate change, accounting for the vast majority of greenhouse gas
emissions.
As global temperatures increase, sea level rise and extreme weather become even
bigger threats to communities at home and around the world. Already in the
United States weve seen major hurricanes, floods, drought and wildfires all
linked to climate change, and thats just in the past few years .
There are some organizations that are working on global
warming issues. These are:
1) 35o.org
2) Sierra Club
3) Green peace
4) Idle No More
5) Union of concerned Scientists
Main Goals:
-350.org was founded with the goal of uniting climate activists into a
movement, with a strategy of bottom-up organizing around the world.

-The Sierra Club, founded in 1892 by conservationist, naturalist and explorer

John Muir, was mostly made up of scientists interested in exploring the Sierra
mountains.

-Greenpeaces initial advocacy work focused on its opposition to nuclear testing.

The activists sought to highlight the exploitation of the fragile Arctic environment
for fossil fuel extraction.

-Idle No More, a group of mostly Canadian Native North Americans,

sprang into existence in October 2012, when Canadas conservative prime
minister Stephen Harper pushed a law, known as C-45, through parliament that
rolled back both environmental protections and indigenous peoples sovereignty in
order to make the countrys tar sands, and the crude oil that could be extracted
from them, more easily exploitable. Resource extraction projects, like the tar
sands, often hurt North Americas indigenous populations disproportionately.
-The Union of Concerned Scientists was founded during the height of the Vietnam
war during a teach-in at MIT to protest the US governments militarization of
science. Initially, the group was concerned with nuclear proliferation and energy
issues, but over time has shifted its focus to sustainability. Today, the majority of
the UCSs areas of advocacy focus on climate change.
Areas that organizations focuses on:

1) 350.org focuses on the activities in climate changes around the

world.

2) Sierra Club- Its main focus on exploring the Sierra mountains.

3) Green peace- They focused on nuclear testing.

4) Idle No More- They are concerned with environmental protections.

Resource extraction projects, like the tar sands, often hurt North
Americas indigenous populations disproportionately.

5) Union of Concerned Scientists- This organization is concerned with

nuclear proliferation and energy issues and its main focus on
sustainability.
How can we help stop global warming?

-Reduce Fossil Fuel Use. Burning fossil fuels increases the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. ...
-Plant Trees. Because carbon dioxide is the most important greenhouse gas, planting trees and other plants can slow or stop global warming. ...

-Reduce Waste. ...

-Conserve water
