Paints
Thinners
Batteries
Spray canisters
Tires
Worn-out/broken radios, stereos, and TV sets
Large worn-out or broken household appliances such
as refrigerators, dishwashers, clothes washers and
dryers
What are Special Wastes?

(Definition in the RA 9003)

Special wastes refers to household hazardous waste such as paints,

thinners, household batteries, spray canisters and the like. These
include waste from residential sources hat comprise of bulky waste,
consumer white goods, yard waste that are collected separately,
batteries, oil and tires. These wastes are usually handled separately
from other residential and commercial wastes.
What are Hazardous Wastes?

[definition in the proposed Hazwaste Act]

substances discarded from homes, commercial and industrial

establishments, institutions and healthcare facilities which,
because of the concentration, or physical, chemical, or infectious
characteristics, may cause or significantly contribute to increases
in mortality or serious illnesses, or pose an unreasonable risk and
potential threat to human health, and the environment.
Why do we need to manage hazardous wastes?

Health Effects
Health effects of Common Inorganic Contaminants
CONTAMINANT SOURCE PATHWAYS HEALTH EFFECTS

Arsenic Pesticides Air, water Gastrointestinal

Ore smelting/refining disorder, lower-limb
disorder
Asbestos Heat/flame resistant Air Asbestosis (scarring
applications of lungs)
Cadmium Electroplating, battery Air, biota, Joint pain, lung,
manufacturing water kidney disease
Lead Gasoline, batteries, Air, biota, Impairs nervous
solder, radiation water system, red blood
shielding cell synthesis
Mercury Electrical goods, Water, biota Inorganic: disorder
chlor-alkali plants of central nervous
(inorganic); system, psychoses
fungicides, slimicides Organic: numbness,
(Organic) impaired speech,
deformity, death
