My Favorite Band

551 Section Jennifer Velasquez Martinez

Some bands turn into shorthand for a certain sound or style, and Pink Floyd
belongs among that elite group. The very name connotes something specific: an
elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. Pink
Floyd grounded that limitless sound with exacting explorations of mundane
matters of ego, mind, touching upon madness, narcissism, and society on their
concept albums of the '70s.
Biography
Pink Floyd were founded in 1965 by
students Syd Barrett on guitar and lead
vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters
on bass and vocals, and Richard Wright on
keyboards and vocals. They gained
popularity performing in London's
underground music scene during the late
1960s.
Following creative tensions, Wright left Pink
Floyd in 1979, followed by Waters in 1985.
Gilmour and Mason continued as Pink Floyd;
Wright rejoined them as a session musician
and, later, a band member. The three
produced two more albums, A Momentary
Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division
Bell (1994), and toured until 1994. After
nearly two decades of acrimony, Pink Floyd
reunited with Waters in 2005 for a

Comfortably Numb
Hello? Hello? Hello? OkayJust a little pinprick
Is there anybody in there? There'll be no more, ah
Just nod if you can hear meIs there anyone But you may feel a little sick
at home? Can you stand up?
Come on nowI hear you're feeling down I do believe it's working, good
Well I can ease your pain That'll keep you going through the
Get you on your feet again show
RelaxI'll need some information first Come on it's time to go
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts? There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
There is no pain you are receding You are only coming through in waves
A distant ship smoke on the horizon Your lips move but I can't hear what
You are only coming through in waves you're saying
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're When I was a childI caught a fleeting
saying glimpse
When I was a child I had a fever Out of the corner of my eye
My hands felt just like two balloons I turned to look but it was gone
Now I've got that feeling once again I cannot put my finger on it now
I can't explain you would not understand The child is grown
This is not how I am The dream is gone

Content of the Song

When the song was adapted to the film, it

took on an extra layer of meaning in
context. The song begins when the
protagonist's manager bursts in to find him
(the protagonist) in a drug-induced state of
catalepsy, where he sat there,
unresponsive.This scene was both inspired
by Roger's experience (a doctor wakes the
protagonist up with an injection) and by Syd
Barrett, the founder of Pink Floyd. Syd
developed schizophrenia due in large part to
his massive LSD use, and ultimately was
forced out of the band he had founded. The
second half of the film, where the
protagonist goes insane, was based in large
part on Syd.In that sense, "Comfortably
Numb" is one of the last lyrics Roger Waters

Conclusion
Their sonic universe is
expansive, intense, and
challenging ... Where most
other bands neatly fit the
songs to the music, the two
forming a sort of autonomous
and seamless whole complete
with memorable hooks, Pink
Floyd tends to set lyrics within
a broader soundscape that
often seems to have a life of its
own ... Pink Floyd employs
extended, stand-alone
