INTRODUCTION
3

The rate of production of waste has increased tremendously in

almost all parts of the world in the past few decades. Every year, 7.2
million tones of plastic waste is produced and its disposal is
becoming a major issue, Indian government spends about Rs 1600
crore for treatment & disposal of these wastes. Hence using
polythene construct the roads will decrease the disposal problems.
Polythene roads mainly used polythene carry bags, disposal cups
and bottles that are collected from garbage dumps as an important
ingredient of the construction material. When mixed with hot
bitumen plastic melts to form an oily coat over the aggregate and
the mixture is lied on the road surface like a normal tar road.
POLYTHENE??
4

A material that contains

one or more organic polymers

of large molecular weight

and solid in it.

Why5 polythene is used in road construction?
Durable and corrosion resistant.

It is economical and has longer life.

Maintenance free.

Light weight.

Good insulation for cold, heat and sound saving energy

and reducing noise pollution.
Steps in Preparation of polythene for road

construction

1. Segregation
2. Cleaning process
3. Shredding process
4. Collection process
1.Segregation
7
Plastic waste collected from various
source must be separated from other waste.
Maximum thickness is 60 microns.

2.Cleaning process
plastic waste gets cleaned and
dried.
8
3.Shreading process
In this, material will be shredded
or cut into small piece. The different
types of plastic waste are mixed
together.

4.Collection process
The plastic waste retaining in
IS 2.36mm is collected.
Mixing process of polythene
9
There are mainly two process of mixing are present as
follows,
1. Dry process
2. Wet process
10

Waste Polythene by direct mixing with hot bitumen at

160degree Celsius.
Mechanical stirrer is also needed
Additional of stabilizer and proper cooling.
Wet process require a lot of investment and bigger plants
so not commonly used.

HOW MUCH PLASTIC? HOW MANY ROADS?

Each 5-member familys use of 5 gm plastic bags a

week, all-India = 52,000 tons a year. Assume 50%
of this is available for roads.1.5 tons plastic goes
into average 1 km road. So re surfacing just 35,000
km of roads a year will absorb all this littered
waste. This is just 3.5 % of Indias 1 million km
surfaced roads. (1.1 million km more roads are un-
surfaced).
Advantages of using polythene in road
construction
13

Strength of the road increases.

Resist the entry of water into the subgrade.
Maintenance of cost of road is almost nil.
Better soundness property.
Increased binding and better bonding of the mix.
Generate jobs for rag pickers.
Develops technology which is ecofriendly.
Dis advantages of using polythene waste in road
construction
14

Cleaning process Toxic present in the co-mingled plastic

waste starting leaching.

During the road laying process the presence of chlorine

will definitely release HCl gas.
CONCLUSION
15

Polythene road would be a boon for Indias extremely

humid climate where durable and ecofriendly shows which
will relies the earth from plastic waste.
Polythene will increase the melting point of the
Bitumen.
This technology not only strengthened the road
construction and increases the life of the road.
