Evaluation question 1

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of media products?
In my opinion I have both challenged and followed the codes and conventions
that remain the norm in Rock magazines. I have challenged the stereotypical
ways of Rock magazines by choosing specific models. I have used a female
on my cover page and I have also used a black male in my contents page.
This challenges the codes and conventions as typically only white males
appear inside these magazines. When researching different types of rock
magazines I found out that there is a lack of diversity as there isn't a variety
of gender or ethnicity included in these magazines. I have subverted these
stereotypes by using a variety of ethnicities and gender. On the other hand I
have remained inside the normal conventions of rock magazines by keeping
my main model as a white male and making the majority of my models male

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of media products?
How I followed the codes and
conventions usually seen on a
magazine cover.
Both my Magazine and Kerrang's have several
similarities in both. My magazine cover contains a
large masthead, this is to make my magazine easily
seen on a shop shelf, I did this as Kerrangs main
selling point is their masthead as their magazine is
very popular audiences like to just grab the latest
issue. Kerrang uses three colours creating a colour
scheme throughout the front cover, as did I. I did
this as this follows the Codes and Conventions of a
rock magazine, mainly using red, yellow and black. Words in red
Coincidently my barcode is arranged in the same Codes and
place as the other magazine, this makes sure that Conventions used
the barcode does not cover any important
information. I followed the rules another way by
adding cover lines that overlap my main image, this
makes them stand out more also shown on the
Kerrang magazine. Both my model and Kerrangs
models have direct address to the audience, this
makes the reader more involved with the making of
this magazine, allowing them to know that they are
the target audience. Simple things like the date and
issue number are also norms in both magazine
covers, this proves how long the magazine has been
produced for and how long you have been
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

How I challenged the codes and

I have challenged the Codes and Conventions in
my magazine as the other magazines certain
stereotypical technical codes that I dont include
in my magazine. Firstly the Kerrang magazine
has a tag line which appears below the main
cover line, the tagline is used to highlight a piece
of information in the magazine. The magazine
that I am comparing my one to has a different
shot composition on the front cover. Another way
I challenge the codes and conventions is through Words in red Codes and
my magazine performing a medium shot Conventions used
whereas the Kerrang magazine displays a
medium- long shot model image on the main
cover page. Kerrang does this as they have more
models than what are shown on my magazine.
Although their are specific colour schemes shown
on both magazine, my magazine shows brighter
colours as the Kerrang colours are a lot darker
and muted, connoting a rock genre. Our models
have different body languages also different
facial expressions. The first issue of my
magazine has social media links on the front

Both mine and Kerrang magazines have
similar codes and conventions on the contents
page. Kerrang has subheadings to show the
audience the key points that the magazine
will focus on, similarly Distortion also has
subheadings. My magazine is also very alike
to the Kerrang one as they both have clear
page numbers displayed to help determine
what information is on what page. You could Words in red Codes and
also say that my contents page is set out Conventions used
similarly to the other one as my main image is
on one side of the page as the information is
on the opposite side. Both models on both
magazines show no direct address, this may
be because the front cover had a direct
address toward the audience, creating variety
I the magazine. The fonts that have been used
on both magazines stay consistent through
the contents page, this is another similarity on
the contents page. This choice was made due
to the front page including multiple different
fonts, using the same font on the contents
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

How I challenged the codes and

On my contents page I have included a
description on my main picture to give
information on the image whereas Kerrang
have not done this. Kerrang's rock magazine
includes an editorial, in contrast mine includes
another image instead. My masthead appears
on my contents page and is the same size that
is it on the front page. Kerrangs mag contains
Words in red Codes and
no sign of the fact that it is their contents page.
Another difference between my magazine and Conventions used
Kerrang includes colour scheme. The colour
scheme on Distortion contains the exact same
colours shown on the front cover, whereas
Kerrang use only yellow and black, removing
the colour red when progressing into the
contents page information. Finally the main
image shots are different , the Kerrang image is
a closer picture compared to the Distortion
picture. These are the differences in the two
magazine contents pages and their codes and
conventions.

Both mine and Kerrang magazines have
similar codes and conventions on the double
page spread. Kerrang yet again has
reoccurring colours throughout the double
page spread, as does Distortion, this keeps
something consistent in the magazines
helping to sell more products. Stereotypically
the majority of magazines in general have a
drop cap at the beginning of the article, Words in red Codes and
usually in the Stan first which we both also Conventions used
have. Both mine and Kerrang magazines have
not subverted this stereotype. Headlines in
another technique I have used to copy the
Kerrang magazine. All models on both
magazines show direct address, I have also
copied this magazine in that way as I feel like
it engages the audience. Picture credit has
been stated in both magazine double page
spreads, this gives the audience the
information of who took the picture/s. Another
similarity between the Distortion magazine
and the Kerrang magazine is that we both

On my double page spread I have included a
few elements that the Kerrang magazine did
not. I added a by-line into my magazine as it
shows who actually wrote the article, Kerrang
did not do this. Our magazines have a different
choice of shot sizes on the double page spread.
Kerrang have used a medium shot as I have
used a long shot. Kerrang may have added a
medium shot to display the artists to closer to Words in red Codes and
the audience. I used a long shot as I wanted the Conventions used
audience to see what the models are wearing
and what props they're using. Finally our
magazines have a different amount of models
in each. These are the differences in the two
magazine double page spreads and their codes
and conventions.
