Observation of Ava

About Ava

Ava is four years old.


She is tall and skinny
She has brown hair
Ava has ADHD and has a hard time concentrating on activities for any
length of time otherwise healthy.
She is in Tap/Ballet/tumbling classes as well as swim classes
About the location

Ava was in the comfort of her own home.


She was in a room just off the side of the kitchen. This room had no doors for
her to close. Expect the Arcadia which lead outside to the backyard but the
door was locked.
It had a huge shelf white shelf. On this shelf were about twenty cubbies. Some
of these cubbies had boxes and each boxes were toys for Ava to play with. The
Toys ranged from Legos to Dolls.
On each side of the shelf was a purple toy bin.
There was a kid size table for Ava to play on and a tent next to the table that
was see through
And finally there was a computer desk in the corner of the room.
About The Location (Continued)

The play room has Legos and building blocks to play with
The playroom has dress up clothes, dolls, strollers and shopping cart to
play with
She was with her little sister, mom, and Christina ( her dad was in the
other room but Ava talked to him a few times as well)
What We Observed:

Ava was observed in her playroom


She was playing with play dough by her self for a little bit, then her sister
woke up from her nap and they started playing with their tent, hiding in it
She then also wanted to show off that she can Hop on one foot, spin in
circles and showed off various different Ballet and Tap moves that she has
learned
She also got a Look and Find book and was able to find everything on the
pages herself, and was able to tell us what each object was
She built things with her Legos and was able to call off the colors of each
Lego
4 year old Cognitive Milestones

Speak clearly using more complex sentences


Stack 10 or more blocks
Walk forward and backwards easily
Identify shapes and colors
Understand and name a few different colors
Beginning to understand and recognize come numbers/alphabet
letters
Ava- Cognitive

Ava seemed interested in Strangers, she asked Christina a lot of


questions and was able to carry on a conversation
Ava loved to sing songs while she was playing, she played with her
Legos building different things, and would show off to everyone in the
room what she had made.
Able to name several colors (green, yellow, black, pink, purple, yellow)
Able to understand the concept of time (when I said she had 15
minutes left maybe we could read a book, she understood this)
Able to use a Look and Find book and find all the objects on the pages
Physical Milestones

Jumping with two feet over objects


Hopping - although this is usually very wobbly
Walking confidently, one foot on each step, up and down stairs
Walking for a short distance along a line before falling off
Learning how to swing himself on a swing - even though he'd still like
you to believe that he needs you to push!
Confidently self-dressing
Ava-Physical

Ava showed off how she can hop on one foot


She showed off different tap and ballet moves that she has learned
She was able to walk around without stumbling
She was able to use building blocks and build and count and say the
colors
She was able to run around the playroom with out falling over
Ava meets all the milestones of a 4 year old, and in some areas
exceeds them she is very smart and has a good sense of balance when
showing off her dance moves and her running around
Social and Emotional Milestones

Enjoy playing with others


Understand and obey rules
Be more independent
Control Emotions
Understands others feelings
Express anger verbally rather then physically most of the time
Still confuse make believe with reality
Ava- Emotional

Ava seems advanced and does reach her milestones emotionally


She shows control over her emotions
When rolling out her play dough Ava frowns and says its hard but
doesnt give up or get angry
She was able to share toys with her sister without getting upset
Understands and follows rules
Shows shames by shrugging and frowning when she admits to watching
shows her parents dont allow
Ava- Social

She meets social milestones


She didnt know Christina and was very comfortable talking to her and
showing her things she knows how to do
Ava asked for Christina to come back when it was mentioned that it was
almost time to leave because she wanted her to stay and play
Ava even talks to Christina about her boyfriend which is a friend she
has had since 9 months old
Language Milestones

4 year olds should be understood 100% of the time


They can hold long conversations
Can pronounce sounds such as CH, SH, TH etc.
Count ten or more objects
Understands the word STOP
Recognize some letters and possibly write his or her name
Correctly name at least four colors and three shapes
Ava- Language

Ava likes to make conversation and to say her idea and thoughts to
others
she did make some errors in her speech such as when she attempted
to say remote control and mustache
She can say complete sentences and hold a conversation
Knows when to use the words Thank You and Excuse Me
appropriately
Ava is on track in language although she has a few errors she can still
be understood, she can speak to others with no problem and hold
conversations with few errors, it is normal for a 4 year old to have
errors in speech.
