Quality Measuring
Devices
Measuring of water pollution.
pH is a measure of hydrogen ion
concentration in solution.
Ranges from 0 to 14 std. units.
pH 7 neutral.
pH 0-7 acidic.
pH 7-14 alkaline.
Quality Measuring
Devices
Conductivity
Measures electric conductivity of water.
It increases when more salt is dissolved
in water.
Quality Measuring
Devices
Salinity
Is classification of ground water based
on its salt content.
Water composition analyzed based on
total dissolved solids content.(TDS)
Quality Measuring
Devices
Turbidity
Is the measure of the amount of total
suspended solid particles in the water.
(TSS).
Suspended particles diffuse sunlight and
absorb heat. This can increase
temperature and reduce light.
Quality Measuring
Devices
Alkalinity
Alkanity in wastewater results from the
present of hydroxides (OH-), carbonates
(CO3),and bicarbonate ion (HCO3) of
elements such as Ca,Mg,Na,K and
Ammonia.

Biochemical oxygen
demand (BOD)
BOD is oxygen uptake
by microorganism
during aerobic growth
in wastewater sample.
Pure water BOD = 1
ppm.
Polluted water BOD =
5 ppm and above.
