Australian Coins

If you have 1 of every coin, how much

money do you have? $3.85 = 385c
If you have 2 of every coin, how much
money do you have? $7.70 = 770c

$1 + 50c + 50c + 20c + 20c + 10c + 5c

+5c =
$2.60 = 260c
$2 + $1 + 50c + 50c + 20c + 10c + 10c
+5c =
$4.45 = 445c
Numeral: the picture of a number: 6,
VI, and _ are all examples of
numerals.

Digit: the number of places a number

has.
7 has one digit. 19 has two digits. 137
has 3 digits.
Place: the value of a number based on the
order of the digits.

1, 764 1 is in the thousands place.

7 is in the hundreds place.
6 is in the tens place.
4 is in the ones place.
so
1 = 1000 7 = 700 6 = 60 4=4

1000 + 700 + 60 + 4
= 1, 764

Measurement
Measurement
We can compare height, width and
thickness by placing objects next to
each other to see which is bigger.
Height how tall something is from
top to bottom. (2D and 3D)
Width how long something is from
left to right. (2D and 3D)
Thickness (depth) how deep
something is from front to back (only
3D)
Write in order from smallest to
biggest:
notebook, homework book, Mentals,
Signpost

Height: homework, Mentals, Signpost,

notebook
^same height^

Width: homework, Mentals, Signpost,

^ same
Symmetry
Symmetry means that if you fold a
shape in half in the right way, both
sides will be exactly the same.
The parts on both sides will match
each other if a shape is symmetrical.

Line of Symmetry is the line

where you fold a shape so that both
sides are the same and symmetrical.
1. Draw the symmetrical shapes in your notebook.
2. Draw the lines of symmetry.
3. Color one half.
3D Objects
Cross-section the
shapes we have after we
cut through a 3D object.

For example, if you cut an

orange in half, the 2
pieces are 2 cross-sections
Symmetry in the Real World
Many things in our life are symmetrical.

Many things would not work correctly if

they were not symmetrical.

Examples: If they werent symmetrical

1. birds and airplanes could not fly straight.
2. people would have a hard time walking.

What else can you think of?

Multiplication Tables
6 x 2 = 12 is the same as
saying:
6 groups of 2 things = 12 things in total.

For example:
6 groups of 2 apples = 12 apples.

2 x 6 = 12 is the same as
saying:
2 groups of 6 things = 12 things in total.
Money: Dollars ($) and Cents (c)
5c
If I have twenty 5c coins, I have $1
20 x 5c = $1 (100c)

10c
If I have ten 10c coins, then I have $1
10 x 10c = $1 (100c)

20c
5 x 20c = $1

50c
2 x 50c = $1

Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
Parallel Lines are always the same
distance apart.
1. They are straight lines.
2. They are in the same direction.
3. They never touch each other.

Perpendicular Lines meet at right

angles.
1. They are straight lines.
2. They cross over each other at a right 90
degree angle.
Perpendicular lines must intersect
with each other at a 90 degree right
angle.
Perpendicular lines must be
opposites:
If the 1st line is vertical, the other
must be horizontal.
If the lines are diagonal, they must
go in the exact opposite direction.
Parallel lines must never intersect.
Parallel lines can be horizontal, vertical
or diagonal in the same way.
Which streets are vertical?
Acorn
Which streets are horizontal?

Which street is diagonal?

There are 5 pairs of
perpendicular streets.
Pairs of perpendicular
streets:
There are 3 streets that are horizontal
and parallel:

There are 2 streets that are vertical and

parallel:

There is one street that is not parallel or

perpendicular to any other streets:
More Than / Less Than
more than means to add:
5 more than 20 = 20 + 5 =
25
5 more than 20 = 25
9 more than 36 = 36 + 9 =
45

less than means to subtract:

5 less than 20 = 20 5 =
15
5 less than 20 = 15
9 less than 36 = 36 9 =
27
An odd number minus an even number is an
odd number.

Greater Than / Less Than
Greater than means the first number is
bigger than the second number.
5 is greater than 4.
We can use this symbol: >
5>4 20 > 16 28 > 22 437 > 219

Less than means the first number is

smaller than the second number.
We can use this symbol: <
4<5 13 < 18 23 < 44 565 < 744
Subtraction from 2 Digit Numbers

Strategies to subtract from 2 digit

numbers:

Use place-value blocks

Use the jump strategy
Addition with the Jump Strategy
For the jump strategy:
1. Start with the larger number.
2. Jump forward by tens, then jump by
ones.
Examples: 45 + 23 = ____
45---------55---------65-66-67 =
68
+10 +10 +3
47 + 34
47----------57----------67----------77-78-79-80 =

Write the questions. Draw a picture and
answer.
1. There are 12 balls and of them are blue.
6/12 of the balls are blue.
6 = blue balls 12 = total balls

2. There are 16 triangles and of them are green.

_____/______ of the triangles are green.

3. There are 12 squares and of them are red.

_____ / _____ of the 12 squares are red.

4. There are 20 stars and 1/5 of them are orange.

____ / ____ of the stars are orange.
Place Value up to 10,000
Place value is how much a digit is
worth based on where the digit is in the
numeral.
Example: 13,948
1 = 10,000 (Ten Thousands place)
3 = 3,000 ( Thousands place)
9 = 900 (Hundreds place)
4 = 40 (Tens place)
8=8 (Ones place)
In your books, try to solve these
problems. Record the inverse calculation.

+13=29 -8=14

+20=41 -19=13

+17=31 -27=56

+14=35 - 30=65
