Science Class

Tuesday, September 6, Materials: journal, pencil,

2016 and Salt and Ice Water
Class begins at 8:30 Experiment sheet

Designing an Experiment
How was your weekend? Tell me about
how you spent your Labor Day in the
Chat box.
Disclaimer: This session will be recorded for learning purposes. Learning purposes
include: a lesson review for students who are absent, students who want to review
for a test, etc.
The mission of the Georgia Cyber Academy is to provide an
exemplary educational experience to students in a unique and
individualized setting.
Moment of Reflection
Georgia Cyber Academy
encourages, at the start
of each day, all students,
teachers, and
administrators to
engage in a brief period
of quiet reflection for
one minute.The
moment of quiet
reflection is not
intended to be and shall
not be conducted as a
religious service or
exercise, but shall be
considered an
opportunity for a
moment of silent
reflection on the
anticipated activities of
Georgia Standards
S5CS1. Students will be aware of the importance of curiosity,
honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit
these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world
works.
a.
Keep records of investigations and observations and do not
alter the records later.
b.
Carefully distinguish observations from ideas and speculation
about those
observations.
c.
Offer reasons for findings and consider reasons suggested by
others.

d. Take responsibility for understanding the importance of

being safety conscious
What will be learning and working
on this week?
Essential Questions of the lesson:

Write these in your science journal. We will

discuss the answers at the end of the lesson

What special steps do Scientist take

when designing an experiment?

Why is it important that an

experimental procedure be detailed
and easy to follow?
Science experiments always
reach the same conclusion.

True False
What is a variable?

Dependent variable (responding variable)

-the thing in the experiment being
tested

Independent variable (manipulated

variable)
-the thing changed to determine the
dependent variable
Lets practice:
Open a faucet:
(independent variable)
the quantity of water
flowing (dependent
variable) changes

Giving a dog a treat:

( )
the dog increases the
amount it barks
Adding fertilizer to a ( )
plant:
(
)
the plant growth Increasing study time:
increases (
( )
) the students test score
increases
(
Lets Practice
Whats next when designing an
experiment?
List materials needed and gather
supplies for experiment
Write down and number the steps
that they will follow to complete the
experiment
Taking careful notes is
important. It allows other
scientists to redo the
experiment and check the
results!
Salt and Water Lab

OLS Lesson
Essential Questions of the lesson:

What special steps do Scientist take

when designing an experiment?
Identify all variables, list materials, and
write specific detailed step by step
instructions.

Why is it important that an experimental

procedure be detailed and easy to
follow?
It will let others repeat the experiment
and check the results.
Thanks for coming!
Flip through the slides to
fill in your notes.
