Discussion

Why do you think it is crucial to reduce wastes coming

into landfills?
Soil and water pollution leachate from landfills are hard to treat,
contain extremely high BOD and COD and leaching could prolong
for years.
Atmospheric pollution GHG emission esp. methane,
uncontrollable self-burning of methane, odour and hygiene
problems. Transportation of waste to and fro landfills also emitted
GHG
Landfills require large area.

a comprehensive waste prevention, recycling, composting,

and disposal program

ISWM Waste Prevention

Aim: to prevent waste from being generated.

Strategies:
less packaging,
designing products to last longer,
reusing products and materials.

Benefits: helps reduce handling, treatment, and disposal costs, reduces the
generation of methane.

ISWM - Recycling and Composting

Recycling: involves collecting, reprocessing, and/or recovering certain waste materials

to make new materials or products.
(e.g., glass, metal, plastics, paper)

Composting: natural decomposition of organic waste under oxygen-rich

conditions

ISWM - Recycling and Composting

Benefits:
create jobs and income,
supply valuable raw materials to industry, produce soil-enhancing compost,
reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the number of landfills and combustion
facilities.
ISWM - Disposal (landfilling and
combustion)
Aim: to manage waste that cannot be prevented or recycled.
Landfilling: safe containment of waste in a properly designed, constructed, and
managed landfills.
Benefit: generate energy by recovering methane.

Combustion: controlled burning of waste, which helps reduce its volume.

Benefit: produce steam and water as a byproduct that can be used to generate
energy
