STATE OF POOR
How is poverty defined in India?
Indian poverty estimates are calculated on the basis of house
hold consumption expenditure.
Any person consuming less than 2,400calories a day in the
rural area and less than 2,100 calories per day in an urban area
is considered below poverty line. Other aspects of poverty
include access to medical care and schooling,indebtness and
insecurity.

What percentage of people live below poverty line?


26.1 per cent of Indian people (260.3 million people) still
live below poverty line.
How is poverty defined globally?
According to the world bank, people who earn
less than $1 (Rs 45) a day are considered to be
below poverty line.

people) live below poverty line.
SLOW PROGRESS
In 1938 a national planning committee of
the congress party headed by Mr. Nehru
arrived decided poverty level at Rs. 15-25 at
1940 prices and expected it to increase by
5-6 times in ten years.
But in actual, after independence it took 20
years to double the national income and
another 19 years to double it further.
What the Nehru generation thought could
be done in 10 years ----took around 45 years.
PANACEA FOR POVERTY
National rural employment guarantee scheme: Rs11,000
crore .All state govt. to provide atleast 100 days of guaranteed
wage employment to one member of every household.
Swaranjayanti gram swarojgar yojna :Rs 862.24 crore.Help
poor farmer rise above poverty level through bank credit and
govt. subsidies.
Indira awas yojna: Rs2,750 crore. Construction of low cost
houses for poor.
Sarva siksha abhiyan: Rs7,156 crore. A non lapsable fund for
childrens education.
Pradhan mantri gram sadak yojna: Rs 3,809 crore.
Construction of rural roads.
