The Ontario Physical Education
Safety Guidelines
The Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines
(OPESG) are produced by Ophea in partnership with:

OSBIE - Ontario School Boards Insurance Exchange

The Ontario Physical Education Safety
Guidelines: safety.ophea.net
An online resource, Ontario Physical Education Safety
Guidelines are:

the minimum standard;

must be met when addressing the safety component;
for physical activities in curricular programs,
intramural activities, interschool practices and
competitions.

Boards can follow the guidelines as presented or can raise

the standards to meet their specific needs across the
province of Ontario.

Page 5
Intent of the Ontario Physical Education
Safety Guidelines
Assist administrators, teachers/coaches/intramural
supervisors in fulfilling obligations to provide the safest
possible program by addressing the critical safety
components listed by the Ministry of Educations H&PE
Curriculum 1-8; 9-10; 11-12:

Page 12
Minimize Student Injury and Protection from
being named in a Negligence Suit

Teachers are expected to:

address most recent OPESG (or localized school safety
guidelines) prior to physical activity;
implement appropriate criteria in Generic Sections;
implement safety criteria on sport/activity pages;
implement appropriate appendices e.g., Appendix A
take attendance; and
document relevant safety practices.

Litigation

Plaintiff lawyers know teachers are to follow a

standard of care
OPESG/localized versions recognized as standard
of care for physical activities in school setting in
Ontario
OPESG used to support claim that teacher/
principal/school board did not use minimum
standard
Claiming ignorance is not a defence in a
negligence suit
