Health Information System
It is the integral part of the national health system
Basic tool of management
Key input for progress of any society
Strong health information systems support greater
transparency and accountability by increasing
access to information.
Unfortunately, many low and middle-income
countries (LMICs) have a long way to go to
achieve these goals

Definition
Definition: A mechanism for the collection,
processing, analysis and transmission of
information required for organization and
operating health services, and also for research
and training.

7
Objectives
To provide reliable, relevant, up-to-date,
adequate, timely and reasonably complete
information for health managers at all levels
(i.e., central, intermediate and local), and at the
sharing of technical and scientific (including
bibliographical) information by all health
personnel participating in the health services of
a country
To provide at periodic intervals, data that will
show the general performance of the health 8
Differences Between Data,
Information and Intelligence
Data Information Intelligence
Consists of Transformed from The
discrete data by reducing transformation
observations of them, summarizing of information
attributes or them and adjusting through

Requirements To Be Satisfied (WHO
Expert Committee)
1. The system should be population-based
2. The system should avoid the unnecessary
agglomeration of data
3. The system should be problem-oriented
4. The system should employ functional and
operational terms (e.g., episodes of illness,
treatment regimens, laboratory tests)
5. The system should express information briefly and
imaginatively (e.g., tables, charts, percentages),

Components of Health Information
System
Requires information and indicators on the following
subjects
1) Demography and vital events
2) Environmental health statistics
3) Health status: mortality, morbidity, disability, and
quality of life
4) Health resources: facilities, beds, manpower
5) Utilization and non-utilization of health services:
attendance, admissions, waiting lists
11
6) Indices of outcome of medical care
Uses 1
Primary purpose
- personal health information comes into the
system from you or from other sources on your
behalf, for the main reason of giving you health
care
Secondary purpose
- used for purposes such as health system
planning, management, quality control, public
health monitoring, program evaluation, and
research
- information will be de-identified or 12
Uses 2 (Secondary Purpose)
To measure the health status of the people and to
quantify their health problems and medical and
health care needs
For local, national and international comparisons of
health status (subjected to rigorous standardization
and quality control)
For planning, administration and effective
management of health services and programmes
For assessing whether health services are
accomplishing their objectives in terms of their
effectiveness and efficiency 13
8. Epidemiological
surveillance
Sources of Health Information
9. Other health service
1. Census records
2. Registration of vital 10.Environmental health
events data
3. Sample registration 11.Health manpower
system (SRS) statistics
4. Notification of 12.Population surveys
diseases 13.Other routine statistics
5. Hospital records related to health
6. Disease registers 14.Non-quantifiable 14
Limitations
1. Still very difficult to get the information where
it matters most (e.g., community level)
2. No country at the present time has such a
constructed system of health information in
operation
3. Need for complete reconstruction of the health
information system

15
As a general rule, the most
successful man in life is the man
who has the best information
