Theories on how Shatranj
was brought to Europe
1. Charlemagne & the
Empress Irene of the
Byzantine court were
contemplating marriage
and Charlemagne was
given a Shatranj set for a
present (but queen had too
much power) so he called
the wedding off!
2. Knights of the Cross
obtained the game from
Arab lands during the
Crusades (the court of
Saladdin held Shatranj in
high esteem)

Brief History of
Chess

Chess has been dated back

roughly 1500 years,
originating in India, then
spreading to Persia and then
Europe.
General Rules of
Chess
The goal of the game is to capture or trap
your opponents King, and this is called
checkmate.

White always moves first & players take

alternating turns, moving one chess piece
at a time.

Each chess piece has its own movement . A

piece may capture an opponents piece or
move to an unclaimed square.

A piece is captured by landing on the

appropriate square with the moving piece
and removing the defending piece from
play.
How to setup the
chess board

Your right side end square

should be white
White king should be in
black square and vice versa
