Capital of Israel, Middle Eastern city near the Dead Sea

Likely founded in 3000 B.C. by people from Canaan

Has been one of the holiest places of worship for Jews, Muslims, and Christians
since the biblical era.

Has experienced over 118 conflicts in the past 4000 years, because many
groups wanted control over it or to destroy it.
Who are Jews?
- A person apart of the cultural community whose traditional religion is Judaism

- They trace their origins through the ancient Hebrew people of Israel to
Abraham.
- -The Jewish people developed customs, culture, and an ethical system which
identified them as Jews
- In the Bible, Jews were called Hebrews or Children of Israel.
What importance does Jerusalem have on Jews?
- Jerusalem is a holy city for Jews and consider its soil and air to be holy and
sacred
- King Solomon made Jerusalem the capital of Judaism by building the Temple
there in 10th Century BC.
- It was made a holy city over three thousand years ago and those of Jewish
faith have continued that belief throughout time.
- Jews would go to celebrate the holiest festivals. It was the direction in which
they would face when they pray.
Who are Muslims?

- A follower of Islam.

- It is monotheistic.

- Holy place is the Mosque.

- Prophet is Muhammed.

- Muslims make up 23% of the world.

- Mecca (holiest city of Islam) (Kaba).

- Anyone entering Mecca has to pay Pilgrimage.

- There are five pillars of Islam.


What is the importance of Jerusalem to Muslims?
- Prophet Muhammad ascended to the heavens from
Jerusalem.
- Muslims faced Jerusalem in prayer instead of Mecca.

- Connection to Moses, Abraham, Jesus, and other


prophets.
- Muhammad believed Islam was the similar to Judaism, and
Christianity.
- He said people should visit (Sacred Mosque in Mecca, the
mosque in Medina, and Masjid al-Aqsa the furthest
Mosque in Jerusalem.
Who are Christians?
Christians believe in one god, meaning the
religion is monotheistic

They believe in one prophet, Jesus Christ (who


they believe to be the son of God)

There are many different types of Christianity

They have sacred scriptures: The New


Testament, The Old Testament, and the
Gospels

Their place of worship is a church St. Peters Basilica, the center


of the Roman Catholic Church
