Definition
Hospital waste are the waste produced
in the course of health care activities
during Treatment, Diagnosing, and
Immunizing Human being or animals or
while doing Study/Research activities.
75-90% Non-Hazardous/General Waste
10-15% -Hazardous
HAZARDOUS WASTE
Solid liquid or gas wastes that can cause death,
illness, or injury to people or destruction of
environment
if
improperly
treated,
stored,
transported or discarded.
Types of Waste
1. Risk Waste
Anything that is potentially contaminated.
2. Non-Risk Waste
Consists of mainly household waste like left over food
items, packing and paper etc.

2.Segregation:
Done at point of Generation of waste
and put in separate colored coded
bags. Color coding varies from nation
to nation.
CODED BINS
All infectious waste in the ward should be incinerated. The segregation of the infectious
and non-infectious should be done in the unit (waste generation point). For this purpose
each unit should have three colored buckets for the following purposes.
COLOR OF BUCKETTYPE OF WASTE
Red
Hard material e.g. vials, glass bottles, surgical blades, discarded instruments,
plaster casts, artificial kidney used for dialysis etc.
Yellow
Infectious soft material e.g., drip sets, cannulas, nasogastric tube,
blood bags, drainage bags, catheter, swabs, dressing pads, used gloves, mask, etc.
Blue
General municipal waste e.g. papers juice / milk packing material fruit skin etc.
Safety Box
The contents of specified coloured bucket should be sent in separate bags to the
incinerator so as to avoid mixing of infectious and non infectious material.
SOP of the waste management committee MUST be followed.

3.Collection of waste:
Centralized sanitation staffs or any other
sanitation staffs should collect the waste
during morning afternoon or evening under the
supervision of nursing staff and sanitation
supervisor; documentation should be done in
register; Garbage bin should be cleaned and
disinfected regularly.
4. Storage of Waste:
Waste should not be stored in the generation area for
more than a period of 4-6 hours.
It is responsibility of paramedic/sanitation staff to
check for segregation
Waste collected in various areas should be transported
for disposal/Treatment.
