THE TRUTH IS,

THE TRUTH HURTS:

A CASE ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION
Honesty is one of the valued ideals of
human being. Telling the truth seems to be a
rule that people have to follow in any
circumstances. Living life honestly means
opening oneself without restraint and exposing
one's true self to others. Honesty is important
because it acts as good foundation in order to
have a harmonious relationship among people
and organization.

INTRODUCTION
Telling the truth is very vital especially when you
are in the workplace. Employees work in an
organization for a common goal by joining hands with
each other. People in the organization should help
and trust each other in order to do their jobs
effectively and attain the goal of the organization. As
part of the organization, you have to add ideas, give
suggestions, and make opinions that will contribute
to the success of the group. People should tell the
truth about what they think will help the organization.

INTRODUCTION
However, there are times where conflict in the
organization
arises
due
to
different
circumstances. Employees are sometimes the
reason why argument in the workplace occurs. If
you are at fault, you should tell the truth and
admit it. It is better to say the truth, acknowledge
your fault and move on than to keep a secret and
tell a lie just to cover up your mistakes. People
appreciate this quality and also, there is great
humility in admitting mistakes.

INTRODUCTION
At certain circumstances, people choose to tell a
lie than to tell the truth. At some peoples point of
view, they are not telling the truth to avoid hurting
other peoples feelings. The difficulties of telling the
truth appear when the truth known by a person may
hurt the other. Also, some people who knows
something about other people or who have a concern
to the other choose to stay quiet because it is more
comfortable to do and it is hassle free. Avoidance
of telling the truth is a way not to disappoint or hurt
others feelings especially when they mean a lot.

INTRODUCTION
There are lots of situations that trigger a person to
tell a lie. Sometimes, people are in the position
wherein they do not know what to do or what to act.
They are afraid of what their actions and decisions
will result. They are afraid of what other people will
say and react. They are afraid of being criticized.
The conflicts which will occur by telling the truth
may be avoided if you will do it in a nice and right
way. Thoughts, suggestions, and opinions must be
put into words with cleverness putting into
consideration the sensitivity and feelings of others.

INTRODUCTION
On the other hand, people should accept what
other people will say about them and think of it
as constructive criticisms. In this way, these
criticisms will help them to improve as a
person and as a colleague. In such ways, they
can avoid conflicts and can maintain their
sound relationship. Proper communication is
necessary in the organization in order to be
successful.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What are your reactions to Wheelers statement
about why we avoid telling the truth?
2. Wheeler gives a few suggestions for breaking the
vicious cycle of avoiding telling the truth. He
suggests that Honesty requires subtlety. What
does he mean, and do you agree with him?
3. Part of the difficulty in avoiding telling the truth is
that we hate to give or receive criticism. How can
we help each other by giving effective, honest
criticism?
4. In sum, telling the truth can really hurt. What does
this have to do with being an effective leader?

ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION

1. Face the truth about the truth. In knowing what
the truth can do, people must be prepared on its
corresponding consequences. Always consider on
being honest, for people are more likely to pay for
their lies in terms of wasted effort, frustration, and
even cynicism.
2. Have sympathy for the devil. Criticisms are not
always destructive in nature. Looking at criticisms
positively make improve and enhance ones self.

ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION

3. Dont ask for what you dont want to hear. If you
dont want to get rejected or disappointed, do not ask
questions that will provoke you. In the first place,
thinking ahead of time is necessary in avoiding
unnecessary conflicts in the organization.
4. Honesty requires subtlety. Learn how to share your
ideas in a way that will facilitate understanding. In
asking a question or recommending a suggestion,
make sure that you tell them in a nice and clever way
taking into consideration what others may feel about
those words. People should know the impact of telling
the truth on you, on others, and on business success.

ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION

5. Learn to be assertive not aggressive. Assertive
statements contain no blame and no attack.
Conveying both information and feelings calmly is
respectful. When you are speaking about your
own feelings and ideas, you should own them.
Do not suggest that someone else creates those
feelings and ideas for you. They are your
particular reaction to your perceptions.

ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION

6. Be specific about what you want and how you
want to be treated.
Always take the
responsibility on teaching and letting the people
know how to treat you. If you do not tell someone
how their behavior affects you, and it affects you
negatively, you are silently telling them that it is all
right will you. Done assertively, most people will
listen and respect your boundaries. On the same
manner, also learn to treat other people on how
they want to be treated.

ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION

7. Always be prepared. When you know that you
are heading into a situation that could be touchy
or difficult, or where harm could be done if care
was not taken, prepare yourself. Be clear about
your issues concerns, and boundaries. Your
preparedness will help you survive the difficulty on
telling the truth and will provide you with wider
ideas that can help you in telling your thoughts in
the best possible approach.

DISCUSSION OF BEST A.C.A.

Honesty requires subtlety. Honesty means being true
to your words. And since in the process of saying the
truth or in the process of being honest, one may hurt
others feelings unintentionally, honesty must always be
accompanied by subtlety. Our thoughts must be put into
words with cleverness putting into consideration the
sensitivity and feelings of others. In most of the situation,
what matters more is the way the message is
communicated than the message itself. So the choice of
words and the manner of saying them must be in a way
that will facilitate understanding and will be accepted by
the person positively and heartfully.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Wheeler stated that we should avoid telling
the truth to keep our sound relationship with
our colleagues. What he told is true because
we don't want our colleague to feel rejected
especially when their ideas do not coincide
with ours. Avoidance of telling the truth is a
way not to disappoint or hurt others feelings
especially when they mean a lot to us.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Sometimes when people give criticism,

they often omit the true meaning so that it
may sound as unoffending as possible.
There are reasons why people do not
give feedback honestly and just choose
to tell a lie. One reason is to avoid ruining
relationships and hurting other peoples
feelings.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

They want to be more sensitive on what the
other people may feel or react on what they
will tell so they will just hide the truth from
them. Another reason is that they want to
show that they support others on their actions
and decision although they really dont feel it.
It is very difficult to tell the truth to someone
especially if that person is very close to you.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

False feedback isnt always a deception
rather it is another way of choosing the right
words to go well with the feeling of the other
person. It is done so that he/she will get the
idea and know the truth in a pleasant way.
Sometimes, the idea expressed in words is
right but the way of saying it is not.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Criticisms are always a part of ones life.
People avoid talking or even sharing the most
brilliant idea because of the fear of criticisms.
But this is so wrong. Not all criticisms are
helpful nor should you believe to all of them
but if you are trying to accept all criticisms
without getting hurt, more likely youll get what
you want when you need it. There are people
who would consider your feelings and then
twist some details behind the truth.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Yes, youll be satisfied with a lie but youll
never know the truth behind that. Youll never
get a chance to truly know what they really
want to say to your performance and other
stuffs. The best way to get honest feedbacks
is to ask the right question in the right place.
Example, ask questions in a forum to avoid
face-to-face interaction because people tend
to be honest and fairly judge you when you
two are not alone.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Furthermore, read between the lines of their
feedbacks. Listen carefully and analyze it
thoroughly, in that way youll get their hidden
message. You should also make it clear that you
can acknowledge harsh observations and indicate
that it will not break the bond rather it will
strengthen it giving them the chance to expose
more. Living honestly and freely will make a
persons life more enriched and significant.
Honesty helps a person to strengthen his
relationship, conquer problems and excel in life.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Truth is about actions as well as words.
Knowing that the truth can really hurt, a leader
must accept all the truth and hurt in order to
improve. He/she must accept all the criticisms in
a constructive and positive way for it will surely
improve not only his totality as a being but also
his men. An effective leader must also face the
truth bravely, acquire all the necessary guts in a
truthful give-and-take, and have the ability to
cleverly state the truth that can hurt in a less
painful way

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

In case you really have something to say

or suggest that will surely improve your
organization, try it to do in the most
pleasant way a way that will not be
misunderstood or misinterpreted by
others. As what Winston Churchill said,
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may
attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in
the end, there it is.
