Karyotype Matching
Karyotype- A karyotype is a display of the 23 chromosomes found in every cell in your body.
They display the unique pattern and shape of each chromosome that is used to match up to
a crime scene karyotype.
Results:
Crime Scene 1: Sam Sophomore and Carlton Comet
Crime Scene 2: Nancy Normal
By using the karyotypes of each individual that was at crime scene one, we were able to
see a distinct match in the chromosomes that belonged to both Sam Sophomore and
Carlton Comet. Both individuals were born with XYY Syndrome, which caused them to
have one X chromosome and two Y chromosomes. However, crime scene twos
karyotype showed Trisomy X Syndrome and the only crime scene suspect that had that
syndrome was Nancy Normal.
Fiber Analysis
At the crime scene a mysterious piece of evidence was left behind. It looked like a
kind of hair. After comparing the evidence to other types of hair like wool, dog hair,
and human hair under a microscope, we discovered it was human hair. This was a
small piece of evidence and initially did not narrow the suspects down until we
extracted the DNA from the hair and ran it on the gel.

After the different colors ( red, yellow, and blue ) separated, we were able to identify the
fingerprints by matching the bands of colors and their pattern to the crime scene
fingerprint. Crime scene 1s run was a match to Sam Sophomore and Carlton Comet,
and crime scene 2 matched to Nancy Normals fingerprint.
Pedigree Chart
A pedigree is a chart that displays the genetic relationships between family members. It can
show diseases and can be used to predict offsprings chance of inheriting a disease.
People with Motive:
1.Glen Glee 2.Carlton Comet 3.Fred Flimmer 4.Nancy Normal 5.Theresa Terra 6.Sam
Sophomore
The pedigree charts that we made for each of the possible suspects showed the family
history of diseases, deaths, and blood types that could have been motive for the killer.
All the people that were at the scene when the murder occurred had some type of
possible motive. Glen Glee was adopted, which could have resulted in trust issues.
Carlton Comet came from prison, which means he has a violent past and changed his
name. Fred Flimmers sister and his aunt, Joan were killed by Freds dad, Thomas
Sandstone! Also Nancy Normals father passed away from Huntington's disease, which
surprisingly was not passed down to her even though it is a dominant disease. Theresa
Terras dad died, and Sam Sophomore is an orphan because his parents died from
Huntingtons disease. These deaths and family issues could have driven any of the
possible suspects to murder.
Fingerprint Matching
When finding a fingerprint on the glass tabletop next to the victim, the fingerprint
was found to be Carltons.
We discovered this by dusting a bright orange powder over the unknown
fingerprint. Then we transferred the fingerprint to a blank piece of paper that
compared the fingerprint to all the suspects fingerprints. We looked at the
fingerprint loops, whorls, and other traits to figure this out.The fingerprint was a
direct match to Carlton Comets.
Ink Chromatography
At the murder scene, there was a note that was written in black ink. To help solve
the crime we needed to find the pen owner. To discover this we drew a dot with
each of the black pens that each possible suspect owned on a strip of paper. Then
we added Isopropyl rubbing alcohol to the paper to measure the distance each
color pigment traveled from the starting point of the dot. This is called the
Retardation Factor. After testing all of the pens that were found at the crime scene,
Nancy Normals pen matched the pen used to write the note.
