Light Emitting Diode

A light-emitting diode (LED) is asemiconductordevice that emits

visible light when an electriccurrentpasses through it.

The light in most LEDs it is monochromatic, occurring at a

singlewavelength.

Working of L.E.D

LEDs are simply diodes that are

designed to give off light.

When a diode is forward-biased so

that electrons and holes move
back and forth across the junction,
they're constantly combining and
wiping one another out.

Sooner or later, after an electron

moves from the n-type into the ptype silicon, it will combine with a
hole and disappear.

That makes an atom complete and

more stable and it gives off a little
burst of energy in the form of
photonof light.

Light Emitting Diodes I-V Characteristics

Before a light emitting diode can

emit any form of light it needs a
current to flow through it, as it is a
current dependent device with
their light output intensity being
directly proportional to the forward
current flowing through the LED.

As the LED is to be connected in a

forward bias condition across a
power supply it should becurrent
limitedusing a series resistor to
protect it from excessive current
flow.

Otherwise it will burn out.

Advantages of L.E.D

They're tiny and relatively inexpensive.

They're easy to control electronically.

They last virtually forever. That makes them brilliant for traffic
signals.

They make light electronically without getting hot and that

means they save lots of energy.

Applications of L.E.D

Lighting

Traffic Lights

LED display

Emergency Lighting (Exit Signs)

Liquid Crystal Display

Aliquid-crystal display(LCD) is aflat-panel displaythat uses the

light-modulating properties ofliquid crystals.

It is the technology used for displays in notebook and other

smaller computers.

Working of L.C.D

Advantages of L.C.D

LCDs consumes less amount of power compared to CRT and LED

LCDs are of low cost

Provides excellent contrast

LCDs are thinner and lighter when compared to cathode ray tube
and LED

Applications of L.C.D

Computer monitors

Cameras

Clocks

Smartphones
