RHYTHM/MOVEMENT, BALANCE, EMPHASIS, PROPORTION,

HARMONY, UNITY, VARIETY

Rhythm is like pattern, in that the same elements (i.e.shape,

line) are repeated; however, with rhythm there are slight
variations in the pattern. Rhythm is easily perceived but complex
and subtle. Think of water on a beach; it continually breaks on
the shore in lines that are repeated, yet each one is different

Balance is the concept of visual equilibrium, and relates to our

physical sense of balance. It is a reconciliation of opposing forces
in a composition that results in visual stability. Most successful
compositions achieve balance in one of two ways: symmetrically
or asymmetrically. Balance in a three dimensional object is easy
to understand; if balance isn't achieved, the object tips over. To
understand balance in a two dimensional composition, we must
use our imaginations to carry this three dimensional analogy
forward to the flat surface.
Symmetrical balance can be described as having equal "weight"
on equal sides of a centrally placed fulcrum. It may also be referred
to as formal balance. When the elements are arranged equally on
either side of a central axis, the result is Bilateral symmetry. This
axis may be horizontal or vertical. It is also possible to build formal
balance by arranging elements equally around a central point ,
resulting in radial symmetry.
There is a variant of symmetrical balance called approximate
symmetry in which equivalent but not identical forms are arranged
around the fulcrum line

Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of the various

elements in a design. The issue is the relationship between
objects, or parts, of a whole. This means that it is necessary to
discuss proportion in terms of the context or standard used to
determine proportions.

Emphasis is defined as an area or object within the artwork

that draws attention and becomes a focal point.
Subordination is defined as minimizing or toning down other
compositional elements in order to bring attention to the focal
point.
Focal point refers to an area in the composition that has the
most significance, an area that the artist wants to draw attention
to as the most important aspect.

Unity in an artwork creates a sense of harmony and

wholeness, by using similar elements within the composition
and placing them in a way that brings them all together.
Variety adds interest by using contrasting elements within
the composition.

The Philippines has joined the rest of the world in applying the

photographers have
taken on the Philippines and our people as a major focus of their
lenses.

Another art form which has risen to tremendous

heights within the last century is film or
cinema. As its early name motion pictures
declared, film brought yet another dimension into
playthat of moving images. The possibilities of
this medium created a new art form that was to
become a powerful social and economic force, and
a
legacy of the 20th century to the world.

A film, also called a movie, motion picture, theatrical film or photoplay, is a

series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of
moving images due to the phi phenomenon. This optical illusion causes the
audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed
rapidly in succession. The process of filmmaking is both an art and an industry.
A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera;
by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation
techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of
some or all of these techniques and other visual effects.

SILENT FILM

Mob films or gangster films are a subgenre of

crime films dealing with organized crime, often
specifically with the Mafia. Especially in early mob
films, there is considerable overlap with film noir

Fantasy films are films that belong to the fantasy genre with fantastic
themes, usually involving magic, supernatural events, mythology,
folklore, or exotic fantasy worlds. The genre is considered a form of
speculative fiction alongside science fiction films and horror films,
although the genres do overlap. Fantasy films often have an element of
magic, myth, wonder, escapism, and the extraordinary
