HUMIDITY

WHAT IS HUMIDITY?
refers to the amount of
moisture (water vapor) in the
surrounding
air.
Humidity
indicates the likelihood of
precipitation, dew or fog.
Higher humidity reduces the
effectiveness of sweating in
cooling the body by reducing
the rate of evaporation of
moisture from the skin.
Water Vapor: Source of all
condensation and precipitation;
most important gas in the
atmosphere for understanding
atmospheric processes.

ABSOLUTE HUMIDITY
Thevaporconcentration ordensityin the air. Ifmvis the
mass of vapor in a volume of air, then absolute humidity,
ordv, is simplydv=mv/V, in whichVis the volume
anddvis expressed in grams per cubic meter.
This index indicates how much vapor a beam ofradiation
must pass through. The ultimate standard inhumidity
measurement is made by weighing the amount ofwater
gained by an absorber when a known volume of air
passes through it.
This process measures absolute humidity, which may
vary from 0 gram per cubic meter in dry air to 30 grams
per cubic meter (0.03 ounce per cubic foot) when the
vapor is saturated at 30 C. Thedvof a parcel of air
changes, however, with temperatureorpressureeven
though no water is added or removed, because, as the

RELATIVE HUMIDITY
is a measure of the amount of moisture in the air
compared with the amount of moisture the air can
hold.
Relative humidity is expressed as a percentage of
how much moisture the air could possibly hold at
the temperature it happens when you measure it. If
the air is at 90% relative humidity, sweat will not
evaporate into the air.

Humidity affects the way we

perceive a given temperature
in other words, at the same
temperature, higher humidity
will generally make us feel
warmer, and lower humidity
will make us feel cooler. This is
because our bodies cooling
mechanism is perspiration, and
when the air holds more
moisture, the dampness on our
skin cant evaporate as easily.

DEWPOIN
T
The temperature at which one
parcel of air would need to be
cooled
in
order
to
reach
saturation if the air was cooled
further it would condense, this
would cause dew, fog, and clouds

HOW IS HUMIDITY
MEASURED?
Ahumidity monitoring deviceis
called ahygrometer. Hygrometers may
be designed for indoor or outdoor
humidity monitoring use (or both). It is
an instrument used for measuring the
moisture content in the atmosphere.

ANALOG HYGROMETER
Analog hygrometers use
a
moisture-sensitive
material
that
is
attached
to
a
coil
spring.
The
spring
controls a needle on an
easy-to-read
circular
dial.
Analog
hygrometers are often
part
of
a
durable,
weather-resistant
device
that
also
includes a thermometer.

ADVANTAGES IN USING ANALOG

HYGROMETER
Inexpensive
Simple to use
When combined with a thermometer, they provide
useful information about the weather or indoor
conditions at a glance.
Sometimes analog hygrometers are combined with
anattractive clockor aclassic weather stationthat
displays the temperature, barometric pressure, and
relative humidity.

DIGITAL HYGROMETER
Digital
hygrometers
determine the relative
humidity
by
using
a
sensor to monitor an
electric current that is
affected
by
moisture
levels. They are often
integrated
into
multifunction
weather
measurement
devices,
ranging
from
simple
indoor temperature and
humidity
monitors
to
indoor/outdoor
devices
with multiple features.

ADVANTAGES IN USING DIGITAL

HYGROMETER
keep track of high and low humidity
measurements, historical data, and trends.
more precise than analog hygrometers, with
a typicalaccuracyrange of 5%
Depending on the model, they may be
mounted on a wall, set on a level surface, or
even magnetically attached to the
refrigerator for easy reference.

OTHER TYPES OF HYGROMETER

Metal Paper Coil Type Hygrometer: The metalpaper coil hygrometer is very useful for giving a
dial indication of humidity changes
Hair Tension Hygrometer: These devices use a
human or animal hair under tension.

OTHER TYPES OF
HYGROMETER
Sling Psychrometer: where the thermometers are attached to a
handle or length of rope and spun around in the air for a few
minutes, is sometimes used for field measurements, but is
being replaced by more convenient electronic sensors.
Chilled Mirror Dew Point Hygrometers: Dew point is the
temperature at which a sample of moist air (or any other water
vapor) at constant pressure reaches water vapor saturation.

OTHER TYPES OF
HYGROMETER
Gravimetric Hygrometer: measures the mass
of an air sample compared to an equal
volume of dry air
