First Five

Silently enter the room and sit down in your

assigned seat.
Begin working on your Activator.
When youve completed your Activator, read your
DEAR book.

Todays Objectives
SWBAT describe how gravity controls the motion of

the solar system by describing gravity and inertia as

forces that affect planets orbits.

GRAVITY IS AN ATTRACTIVE
FORCE THAT PULLS OBJECTS
TOWARDS EACH OTHER.

A gravitational pull exists betweenAll objects on

Earth and in space
Gravity is the force that keeps you grounded to the
Earth and prevents you from floating into space
You are attracted to the Earth AND the Earth is
attracted to you

Law of Universal Gravitation

All objects in the

universe attract
each other by the
force of gravity.
A gravitational
attraction exists
between any two
objects, from the
smallest of particles
to the largest stars
Sir Isaac
Newton

The Big G

Remember: Gravity is
determined by two things
1) Mass
2) distance

CFU
What two things affect gravity??
What do you think would happen

if there was no gravity?

Our Solar System

The force of gravity controls the motion of the

objects in our solar system

All of the planets orbit around the sun

PLANETS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM

CFU
Why do you think this is the order

the planets?

How does gravity affect the solar system?

All the planets, and their moons, are

affected by gravity
The planets closer to each other have
stronger pulls of gravity
The planets with greater mass have
stronger pulls of gravity
If there was no gravity, the planets would
not orbit the sun!

The POWER of the SUN

Everything in the solar system orbits or

revolves around the sun

The sun contains 98% of all the material in the
solar system
Because the sun is so LARGE, its powerful
gravity attracts all other objects in the solar
system
At the same time, the planets are moving away,
so they become trapped half-way in between

How are these planets held in orbit?

Newtons first law of motion states that

an object at rest will stay at rest, and an

object in motion will stay in motion,
unless an unbalanced force acts on it
Inertia is an objects tendency to resist

a change in its motion

How are these planets held in orbit?

Inertia and gravity work together to hold planets and

moons in orbit

Inertia and Gravity CFU

What does everything in the solar

system orbits or revolves around?

How much material does the sun
contain in OUR solar system?
What two forces hold our solar
system in place?

ITS ALL ABOUT GRAVITYS STRENGTH

Objects with the MOST mass have the

most gravitational pull

EXAMPLE:
The

gravity of the SUN keeps the EARTH

in orbit because the SUN has more mass
and more pull
The gravity of the EARTH keeps the
MOON in orbit because the EARTH has
more mass and more pull

Why is gravity important?

All of the planets are kept in orbit due to the gravity

of the sun

Why is gravity important?

Moons are also kept in orbit around the planets due

to gravity

Why is gravity important?

Without gravity, the the

moon would fly away

from the Earth
Without inertia, the
moon would fall into the
Earth

Why is gravity important?

Things fall down because of gravity

Why is gravity important?

The tides of the oceans (high tide and low tide) are

caused by the gravitational pull of the moon.

Moon Affects Earths Tides

Why dont planets fall into the sun?

When did we have high tides? Why?

Why doesnt Earth orbit around the moon instead of

the sun?

Examples:

The moon is circulating the earth because the earth

has a bigger mass then the moon. The moon is not
falling into the earth because of its inertia, and its not
floating away because it is attracted by the
gravitational pull of the earth.
