Centrifugal Filters
A centrifuge consists of a basket in
which mixture of solid and liquid , or
mixture of two liquids is rotated at
high speed so that it is separated
into its constituents by the action of
centrifugal force.

For example fitted during start up period of a new system, or when
re-starting a system after shut-down and maintenance.
Characteristics of the process fluid does not permit usage of a
permanent strainer
To remove coarse debris particles present in the System.
After a suitable period in use, they are removed and they can be cleaned
and stored for future use.
Example of temporary strainer is T-Type Strainer

ROTARY VACUUM DRUM

FILTER

INTRODUCTION
The rotary drum is mainly
used for solid recovery from
liquid suspensions
It consists of a cloth-covered
compartmental drum
suspended on an axial shaft
over a feed trough
containing the suspension
The trough will usually
include an agitator to
maintain the feed
suspension at a constant
concentration

WORKING PRINCIPLE

1. The slurry is continuously fed

into the trough
2. When the equipment is turned
on, the filter drum will start to
rotate
3. As the drum rotates, the
vacuum pump will suck the slurry
towards the central duct

4. The presence of cloth-coating will

absorb the solid molecules to the
cloths surface, and forms a Cake
layer
5. The filtrate is pumped away
through the Vacuum Receiver and
Filtrate Pump
6. The Cake layer will rotate until it
passes through the knife blade, and
the solids are peeled of

ADVANTAGES
The rotary vacuum drum
filter is a continuous and
automatic operation, so the
operating cost is low.
The variation of the drum
speed rotating can be used to
control the cake thickness.
The process can be easily
modified (pre-coating filter
process).
Can produce relatively clean

DISADVANTAGES
Due to the structure, the
pressure diference is limited up
to 1 bar.
Besides the drum, other
accessories, for example,
agitators and vacuum pump, are
required.
The discharge cake contains
residual moisture.
High energy consumption by
vacuum pump.
