MODULAR COORDINATION SYSTEM

BACKGROUND
Modular Construction was first explored as an aid to design shortly
after the introduction of prefabrication in the construction industry in
the industrialized nations.
It was first studied in Singapore when metrication was introduced, in
the early seventy.
The housing and development board implemented the concept in 1973
in the new generation plans.
Modular blocks and bricks were introduced in 1983.

WHAT IS MODULAR COORDINATION?


Modular construction is the process of building a home or other building in
a factory in small pieces for assembly on-site. Though similar in some
ways to the methods used for manufactured homes, modular homes can
be in various shapes and sizes. Instead of just being in two halves like a
double-wide, they're built to fit together like puzzle pieces.

BASIS OF MODULAR COORDINATION


Modular coordination is essentially based on:
The use of modules (basic module, multi module, sub module).
A reference system to define coordinating spaces and zones for building
elements
and for the components which form them.
Rules for location of building elements within the reference system.
Rules for sizing building components in order to determine work sizes.
Rules for defining preferred sizes for building components and
coordinating
dimensions for building.

BENEFITS OF MODULAR COORDINATION


Modular coordination is useful design tool that provides modern design
principles and rules which combine freedom in architectural planning
and free choices of construction methods with the possibility of
incooperating standardized modular components in the project.

When applied throughout the industry it brings the following


benefits:
Better coordination and cooperation between various parties in
construction.
Reduction in design time, specially with the use of standard details and
dimensional coordination.
Benefits through the increased use of computer aided design and
drafting.
Reduction in manufacturing and installation cost.
Reduction in the wastage of materials, time and manpower in cutting
and
trimming on site.
Facilitating prefabrication.

LIMITATIONS AND DISADVANTAGES


1. Room Size:
One of the drawbacks to a modular home is that, while the home can be
very large, the room sizes are typically limited. The units in a modular home
can't be too large to transport on roads, which means that they usually can't
be more than 14 to 16 feet wide and 60 to 75 feet long. While the length
usually isn't a limitation, the width is. On the other hand, modules can be 11
feet tall, which makes a 10 foot ceiling height possible if you desire.
Stacking modules can give you a multi-story home as well.

BASIC MODULE = 1M= 100 mm
STRUCTURAL GRID= 3M (1m as the second reference)
HORIZONTAL MULTI-MODULE= 3M (1m as the second preference)
VERTICAL MULTI-MODULE= 1M (0.5m as the second preference)
DOORS= MULTIPLES OF 1M (width and height)
WINDOWS = MULTIPLES OF 1M (width and height)
SUB MODULAR INCREMENT= 0.5M AND 0.25M
APPLICATIONS:
1. THE BASIC MODULE: It is the fundamental unit in modular
coordination. It is representedby the letter M and is adopted
internationally.The unit M is 100 mm . The symbol nM represents
multiple of M i.e. n = 3,6,9,12,15 etc

2. THE STRUCTURAL GRID: The recommended structural grid is 3M or


multiples of 1M. 3M is chosen, as most materials like the precast floor slabs
in multiple of this dimension.It also fits into the car park lots of 24M into
48M.
3. DOORS: Multiples of 1M ( width and hieght) The measurements include
the door frames.
4. WINDOW: Multiples of 1M ( width and hieght) The measurements include
the door frames.

Modular Reference
System
In Modular co-ordination: - the term modular reference systems is
the three-dimensional system of orthogonal space co-ordinates
within the positions and sizes of components, elements and
installations can be related by references to points, lines, or planes.

Modular Reference
System
Within this references system, dimensional increments are in terms
of the basic module (100mm). Reference planes can be identified
which locate the main vertical and horizontal elements of
construction, e.g. floor, walls, and columns.

Horizontal Coordination

Traditionally, modular theory has distinguished between boundary


planning and axial planning. In practice, however, such a clear-cut
distinction may not exist.

INTRODUCTION
This Standard specifies values of
multimodules and ranges of preferred
sizes for vertical co-ordinating
controlling dimensions for all types of
buildings and their components, such as
height of doors, windows, built-infurniture and fixtures, as well as height
of buildings and its floors, storey and
room heights.
The preferred vertical dimensions shall
include sizes from 24 M and upwards.
In vertical section, the modular floor
plane is the reference plane from which
modular dimensions shall be taken.

GENERAL CONCEPTS
A horizontal modular plane continuous over the whole of
each storey of a building and coinciding with upper surface
of floor covering, the upper surface of the base floor, or
the upper surface of the structural floor shall be selected
as reference point, line or plane ( see Fig. 2 ).
This shall be called as controlling point, line or plane. The
space between two such controlling planes, which is
provided for the floor, shall be called as floor zone ( see
Fig. 3 ).

At a particular storey level, changes in the level required to accommodate the specific functional
need of structure may he met by further reference point, or line or plane. This auxiliary reference
plane shall be shown on the drawing ( see Fig. 4 ).
In the vertical section, only the main reference planes of the control- ling zone containing external
envelope and internal elements of construction which sub-divides the building, horizontally and
vertically, shall be identi- fied on drawings of vertical sections like modular storey height, modular
room height and modular floor height along with modular doorset height, windowset height,
windows silI height, etc ( see Fig. 6 ).

PREFERRED VERTICAL DIMENSIONS

In the vertical section, only the,- main reference planes of the controlling zone containing
external envelope and internal elements of construction which sub-divides the building,
horizontally and vertically, shall be identified on drawings of vertical sections like modular storey
height, modular room height and modular floor height along with modular doorset height,
windowset height, windows silI height, etc ( see Fig. 6 ).

10. RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS


10.1 The preferred vertical controlling dimensions in residential buildings shall be
multiple of 2 M, that is, 20 M, 22 M, 24 M, 26 M, 28 M, 30 M, etc.
11. INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS
11.1 The recommended preferred vertical dimensions for industrial buildings,
single and multistoreyed, shall be applied to the design of structural component
and building elements in increments of 2 M and 3 M; preferably larger sizes shall
be selected from 6 M series.
12. HEALTH BUILDINGS
12.1 The vertical controlling dimensions for health buildings shall be 28 M, 30 M,
32 M, 34 M and 36 M.
13. OFFICE BUILDINGS
13.1 The vertical controlling dimensions for office buildings shall be 28 M, 30 M, 32
M, 34 M and 36 M.
14. EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS 14.1 The vertical controlling dimensions for
educational buildings shall be 30 M, 36 M and 42 M.
