APTERYGOTA

Primitive, wingless insects

No metamorphosis
Further divided into 4 orders

PTERYGOTA
Insects with wings
Undergo complete and incomplete
Metamorphosis
Further divided into 25 orders

SUB CLASS :
APTERYGOTA

1. ORDER :
THYSANURA

EXAMPLE
SILVER FISH
CTENOLEPISMA

Also known as Zygentoma

Encompasses
the silverfish or fishmoths, and firebrats.
Members of the order are best known
for their three long caudal filaments.
Further divided into 5 families
Lepismatidae is the largest family,
widespread with more than 200 species,
many living in human habitations.
The Nicoletiidae are small and live in
soil litter, humus and under stones

2.ORDER: COLLUMBOLA
SPRING TAILS
ISOTOMA

Orchesella cincta

They form the largest of the three lineages

of modern hexapods
Some studies do not consider them to be
insects
They have internal mouthparts opposed to
the external mouth parts in insects
Along with Protura and Diplura are now
placed in a class called Entognatha

3. ORDER : PROTURA
Coneheads

Some evidence indicates the Protura

are basal to all other hexapods

There are close to 800 species,

described in seven families.
Nearly 300 species are contained in a
single genus, Eosentomon

Acerentomon

4. ORDER : DIPLURA
BRISTLE TAILS
CAMPODA
JAPYX
ANAJAPYX

Campodea staphylinus

They are sometimes called "twopronged bristletails".

Around 800 species have been
described, of which around 70 occur
in North America,12 in Great Britain[4]
and two in Australia.

SUB CLASS:
PTERYGOTA

5. ORDER:
EPHEMEROPTERA
MAY FLIES

This order is part of an ancient group of

insects termed the Palaeoptera, which
also
contains dragonflies and damselflies.
Over 3,000 species of mayfly are known
worldwide, grouped into over
400 genera in 42 families.
Mayflies are relatively primitive insects
and exhibit a number of ancestral traits
that were probably present in the first
flying insects, such as long tails and
wings that do not fold flat over
the abdomen

6. ORDER :
ODONATA
DRAGON FLIES
DAMSELFLIES

7. ORDER:
PLECOPTERA
