Project Title: Optimizing History Match by utilization of Artificial

Neural
Network
Period: September

Introduction

Relevancy of Project
Problem Statement

History matching requires large number of simulation runs because there are many
uncertainties in reservoir characterization

High non-linear behaviour of the reservoir

Procedure of history matching is costly, time-consuming and difficult

Automated/Assisted history matching lacks engineering judgement

Introduction

Relevancy of Project
Objective of study:
-

Create an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) enhanced data set to use as input
to reservoir simulation study.

Reduce the number of simulations runs to save time of the expert

Analysis of data using Artificial Neural Network

Predict useful insights of the reservoir performance.

Background Study
Algorithm Applied

Applies Backpropagation algorithm:

Errors are propagated backwards

Hidden Layer: acts a supervised learning layer

Input and output is given and the network computes its own (error between them is
calculated)

The idea of backpropagation is to reduce this error

Algorithm used: Scaled Conjugate Gradient/ Levenberg-Marquardt

What to Expect?

Artificial Neural Network for History Match

Train and develop an Artificial Neural Network that can predict reservoir properties
Produce more realistic reservoir modelling:
-

Incorporates more geology and reservoir information

Model will be more geologically driven

Reduces history matching time:

11

Reduces number of simulation runs

Able to validate the model more accurately

Provide better prediction data
